SMART is an RFO that brings together regions keen to find new ways of dealing with problems for regional development caused by economic restructuring and its impacts in the social and environmental fields. The regions use tools available under Objectives 1 and 2 of the European structural funds. At the same time the regions need to make their development programmes more efficient and meet new challenges arising since the enlargement of the EU.Along the lines established by the Lisbon Strategy, the regions participating in this RFO hope to redirect their economies towards structures for the future based on know-how, while improving both the social situation of those who lose out in development and the environment affected. Overall objective / Objectif général The main objectives of SMART are to exchange previous experiences, to analyse tested practices and to devise new instruments that will make regional development tools and policies more efficient and able to deal successfully with the current transition. Expected results / Résultats attendus The Working Groups within SMART draw up an interregional strategy for sustainable management and present actions which may lead to an economy for the future, with the aim of resolving social and environmental frictions. Interregional meetings are held in order to share experiences and to evaluate any visible results of internal projects.
