Smart Control and Diagnosis for Economic and Clean Engine (SCODECE)

SCODECE partners want to develop a new technology which would lead to clean, economic and safe diesel engines by operating with low temperature combustion. The results of this research should lead to an increase of more diesel vehicles powered by alternative fuel such as bio-diesel, to reduce CO2 emission - greenhouse gas emissions from transport. Partners bring together complementary expertise and resources from France and the UK to conduct their research and increase the value of the project by mutualising costs and outputs.Partners will jointly design a virtual simulator which replicates the behaviour of bio-diesel engines in different situations and can study cost optimisation before making bench tests. Before this, partners will develop possible solutions for an advanced control model of diesel at low temperature combustions, and address issues of safety and security within the system. SCODECE project outputs will benefit many industries in the EU but especially SMEs engine manufacturers and automobile manufacturers of the cross-border area. Expected Results: What are the key results of the project?- The virtual simulator for the validation of controlers has been carried out.- Main scientific results presented to regional, national & international conferences.- The partners will organize an invited session on the Mediterrannean Control Conference in Barcelona on July 2012 entitled: Innovative Design and technologies for the Diesel engine of the future. We are invited by the cluster SIA (Société des Ingénieurs de l'automobile) to present our results to companies.- The testbed constituted by a 6th CylinderCaterpillar will be improved and performed by some extra instrumentation and can help us to perform our results.- A visit to our demonstrator in order to show some results to our industrial partner (TECHNORD) programmed second half 2012- A video made by a professional of multimedia will be delivered.- 4 PhD students & 3 Postdocs recruited - their experience can benefit automotive systems companies (Renault, Peugeot, Ricardo, ...) or environmental/academic institutions.Are all partners and territories benefitting from the results?Target groups:These include the partner institutions (HEI, UPJV, UoS) - academicians of zone 2 seas working in the field of energy optimization of electrical or combustion engines (students, teachers, searchers sensistive to new technologies of interne combustion engines), SME's working for the automotive sector.Beneficiaries:the automotive sector (Ricardo, Renault, Peugeot, LMS, etc...),shipping, environment and sustainable development institutions ( ADEME, cluster i-trans, etc...) and customers where the consumption of fuel will be reduced.Benefits for territory:The SME's and automotive companies can exploit the tools developed by this activity for improving the design of new engine technologies as LTC supplied by Bio-Diesel. Control technology manufactures and control products suppliers for vehicle industry will achieve Control on the requirement of bio-diesel and LTC combustion with VVT will be delivered. These algorithms aim to allow the diesel engine operating on low temperature combustion and to detect failures responsible for the increase of the polluting emission beyond the statutory thresholds imposed by Europe emission regulations. The detection of this type of failures must be guaranteed throughout the life cycle of the engine. The supply of virtual software of simulation to industry can be of a big utility before the implementation on a real system and will improving control performance and decreasing operating costs.What are the effects / outcomes for the territories involved?In adddition to the NOx, CO2 plays an important role on the climate as part of the earth's atmosphere and we have noticed a drastic changes to the climate. In 2010 this portion of CO2 emission in the Eurozone lays at 20%. Consumption-reducing measures have been successfully implemented but with regard to the legal CO2 emission thresholds 2015, further steps are urgently needed. To solve this problem, alternative fuel as Biofuel is proposed in SCODECE. This is produced from renewable resources and has lower emissions than fossil fuels. Some results in SCODECE's project show that it is better to use a mixture of Biofuel than 100% Biofuel in order to maintain the performances of the engine. The new control engine used in SCODECE'S project combinated with both Variable Valve Timing (VVT) and Valve Geometry Turbines (VGT) can reduce high exhaust manifold temperatures and then reduce the consumption of fuel over 5% .
