Green jobs are increasing as a result of the greening of the EU and national policy agendas (related to climate change, biodiversity and ecosystem services, renewable energies etc). Where these jobs concern the sustainable use of natural resources (including biodiversity), the staff of administrations are not always up to the challenge of integrating its complex nature into local policies and actions. The goal of this project is to improve the knowledge, skills and competencies of staff of local administrations to successfully integrate conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity in policies and action at a local level. Their acquired skills will improve the effectiveness of their work, increase their job satisfaction, and improve their competitiveness on the labour market. Their better understanding of the nature and value of biodiversity and increased skills and competencies to apply this knowledge in real life local projects will contribute to a better conservation and more sustainable use of biodiversity for the benefit of society and the local economy.Efforts to integrate conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity through vocational education and training are widespread in Europe. However many of these innovative approaches are developed in a local or regional context and cannot be shared with the wider community due to language barriers and time constraints. Bringing together experts and practitioners in order to develop a common method and approach based on the best practices and experiences existing in the participating countries and later disseminating the results in the local languages will greatly increase the impact of each of the contributing approaches. The consortium that has been formed to improve biodiversity skills for local planning and decision making consists of organisations having both a clear understanding of local reality and international project experience. This will allow for a smooth exchange of experiences and cooperation for the development of the method and materials as well as ensure a wide dissemination among the local target groups, and communication of the results to national and European-level relevant policy makers. The project will result in staff of local administrations being trained to better implement the European green agenda at local level (especially related to biodiversity, sustainability and ecosystem services). They will increase their competitiveness on an increasingly green labour market. The integration of approaches from different countries, regions and settings to biodiversity will increase their chances for labour mobility. Their understanding of the importance of biodiversity and opportunities it offers for local sustainable development will benefit the conservation and sustainable use of natural resources (in particular biodiversity).
