Skilled apprentice and European citizen

The project Skilled Apprentice and European Citizen (SAEC) results from a cooperation between the counties of Akershus and Oslo. It continues the implementation of the long-term international strategy within vocational education and training of the counties of Akershus and Oslo. This strategy aims at systematically integrating international mobility as a method for achieving the educational objectives of our counties within vocational training. We believe this policy improves the attractiveness of VET and sustains its quality by introducing innovative training methods and techniques. The project aimed to offer challenging training opportunities to apprentices so as to widen their professional knowledge, strengthen their professional and language skills, enhance their cross cultural understanding and their ability to be independent and flexible citizens. The project included the placement of 70 apprentices from our region to 13 destinations in 8 European countries: Austria, England, Greece, Germany, Ireland, Italia, Portugal, and Spain. The variety of our destinations and partner profiles allowed us to provide training opportunities in 18 different professions: bricklayer, retail butcher, carpenter, child care and youth worker, car mechanic, chimney sweeper, concrete worker, cook, electrician, hairdresser, health care worker, ICT operator, institutional cook, landscape gardener, plumber, receptionist, salesman and waiter. The scope of the project permitted an impact on vocational training at large and we were able to support individual project initiated by the apprentices themselves. A typical mobility was 13 weeks, and was composed of language courses and work based training in company. We consider the project successful based on these criteria: attractiveness for the apprentices, variety of trades, general level of satisfaction of the candidates toward learning outcomes, general feedback of the concerned actors (training establishments, etc.), and completion rate. All placements were assessed, recognized, validated and included as full part of the vocational training of the apprentices.
