Skandinavisches Design im Gold- und Silberschmiede-Handwerk

Within the project the German goldsmith and silversmith apprentices get some knowledge about the Scandinavian design concerning jewellery and the art of silversmithery. The participants come from small fine arts craft enterprises and jewellers in the area of North Bavaria. After the completion of their exam they work in different enterprises in order to improve their skills. Afterwards some of them gain their master’s certificate in order to take over the parental enterprise or to become self-employed. As far as the style of the trainees is concerned it is mostly influenced by the design of Central Europe. The impact of modern art and functionalism leads to the fact that more and more customers in Germany tend to prefer the more plain and clear design of the Scandinavian jewellery. The aim of the project is that the German goldsmith and silversmith trainees can study this Scandinavian design in a Finnish full-time school. The next step is that the German students put into practice what they have learned. They are supposed to produce a work piece in Scandinavian design under the supervision of a Finnish teacher and with the participation of Finnish students. The requested period of fourteen days for the mobility is rather short. So in order to be able to complete the aim of the project an extensive preparation and preparatory work are necessary: Before the students go to Finland they will already have to acquire some knowledge about the stylistic features of Scandinavian contemporary Designers. Every student chooses one artist/jeweller, finds out what is special about his work and prepares a presentation in English. They will also get in contact via e-twinning with the Finnish students who will be their partners in Finland and start to form tandems. At the same time the students will also learn more specific vocabulary concerning their profession because English will be the bridge-language. Besides they should gain some knowledge about the social-cultural setting in Finland. At the start of the project the students will present their designers and their preliminary drafts and models. The next step is that the final drafts and models are produced with the help of the Finnish teachers. Thereby the special stylistic features of the chosen designer should have an impact on the work piece. During the second mobility week the work pieces are produced. The individual steps are recorded by camcorder and camera. There should also be written some texts explaining the steps of the procedure. After the mobility the complete material should be digitally processed. A touring exhibition should be prepared as well. This exhibition will be opened at the Franz-Oberthür- Schule in conjunction with a press conference. Afterwards the exhibits will be passed on from enterprise to enterprise where the students work and where they can be shown in glass cabinets. The chambers of crafts and trades and the guilds might also be interested in showing the exhibition. A further project activity is the mobility of teachers. The teachers (one specialized subject teacher for goldsmiths and silversmiths as well as the teacher for English and Politics) will teach the Finnish students during the same time period of the mobility of the students. Topics will be: Design of Central Europe in the crafts as well as English and German Politics.
