North East Iceland is an extensive area, about 22.0000 square kilometers with 29.000 inhabitants. Distances between places and people are very long, and getting special knowlegde and skills in the field of culture often requires a lot of travelling. The applicants opperational area covers whole North east Iceland and the role of the institutions includes counseling, policie making and developing project, all in the cultural field. An important factor is connecting people and motivate ambitious cultural projects. Projects based on cooperation both national and international have been one of the focus points in the work of applicants institutions. In rural areas the input of volunteers and amateurs is even more important than in towns and cities. The biggest part of North East Iceland is rural and a big part of cultural acitvities driven and performed by volenteers and amateurs. Encouraging and supporting those individuals and groups, connecting them and their activities is the role of applicants institutions. Policymaking in the cultural matters is a part of the opperation and the forming of area cultural policy is a ongoing project. Getting knowledge and keeping up with developement in the field of experties, is a key factor in successfull work of institutions in rural areas. Therefore these two institutions North East Icleand cultural counsel and Þingeyjarsýsla Cultural Center apply for a grant to participate in two events. One beeing a course on volenteer work and cooperation on projects, which focuses on documenting and promoting. The other a seminar on cultural policy, with overarching emphasis on sharing good practice through European networking. .
