The Research Institute PROMITHEAS undertook to implement a three-month project between May and July 2013 in Nicosia under Action 5.1 - Meetings of young people and those responsible in the youth field of the European Youth in Action Programme focusing on the involvement of young people in elections. The action has included analysis of the factors leading to increased abstention from this electoral process throughout Europe, with particular emphasis on Cyprus, and on recommendatiions and proposals for youth policies that will lead to increased participation, interest and involvement in the next elections for the European Parliament in 2014.The proposals comprise the result of a series of meetings of a group of 15 young people with focus groups of particular age and social origin. The primary focus groups are young people aged 18-24 (years of study) and 25-30 (first years in the labour market). These groups, under the guidance of experts, have discussed various aspects of abstaining from participation in electoral process, and ways / suggestions to improve the engagement of young people. The meetings took the form of seminars, workshops, roundtable, workshops and symposium with presentations of the findings. The results of the action are encoded in a short tri-fold brochure that was circulated massively as well as in the present printed booklet with greater detail in both the Greek and English language so that the diffusion is be more effective. The presentation of the findings was conducted in specific meetings with major stakeholders at national and European level: to Cypriot MEPs and the European Parliament, to the European Commission; namely, bodies which are responsible for measures and policies for youth in relation to elections.During the project and after completion of the publication of the booklet and leaflet of the action, a series of actions of dissemination of all activities and results that were encoded in the leaflet and the booklet were initiated to the media and bodies responsible for youth policies. The dissemination actions of the project have given additional value to both the project itself and to the Youth in Action Programme.
