Signs2Cross: Linguistic mobility for Deaf people in Europe
Date du début: 1 janv. 2013,

Signs2Cross focuses upon a unique linguistic fact: while deaf people rely on their national sign languages for intracommunal communication, they are often able to transcend national sign languages and practice an international form of sign language use in transnational encounters. The various national sign languages have been increasingly recognised in many European countries while "International Sign" (IS), as it is commonly called, has received much less attention. In fact, IS has a somewhat ambivalent status. Even though it lacks the differentiation and efficiency of well-established national sign languages, it is uniquely successful in allowing deaf people to overcome linguistic borders, allowing the development of a sense of connectedness between deaf people of different origins. Building upon an earlier project that established an innovative ‘sign language only’ online course for learning British Sign Language (cf. www.signs2go.eu), Signs2Cross will develop, apply and evaluate a learning platform that gives access to international sign language skills by way of applying five different national sign languages. Signs2Cross will thus offer a language learning tool for exploring similarities and differences between national and international signed forms.Signs2Cross will contribute to the visibility of deaf people and their unique language forms. It will enable deaf people of diverse European backgrounds to expand and reflect upon their abilities to communicate across linguistic barriers, contributing to the linguistic awareness, self-esteem, and mobility of deaf people in Europe. The number of hearing learners of sign languages will increase and, more particularly, it will allow sign language interpreters access to the otherwise ephemeral transnational communication of the deaf.
