Serious Games for Situated Learning of Vehicular Languages addressing Work Needs
Date du début: 1 déc. 2012,

Business-related mobility is now the norm for professionals, academics, vocational workers, and students. Individuals are often called to communicate in a foreign language in cultural settings that diverge significantly from their own and from one country to another. This takes place in the context of not only physical but also virtual mobility enabled by on-line tools and communities. To meet work objectives, professionals rely on vehicular languages, such as English, German, or French. While professional training programs strive to bring language competency to working levels, many fail to address the diverging use of a lingua franca in varying cultural and work environments, which is affected by transfer effects, localized expressions, and communication norms. siLang aims at reinforcing language competence relevant to the workplace through serious gaming by promoting situated language training that familiarizes learners with cultural, societal, and work aspects in various contexts. siLang situated gaming takes past game-based language learning practices a step further through: i) integration of diverging language use by native and non-native speakers ii) adaptability of learning situates in terms of content, learning goals, work roles, social environment, cultural communication, and semantics iii) automation of learning activity development for instructor support iv) use of micro-worlds for immersive learning-by-doing to enhance focus and effectiveness. Outcomes: - A situated, mobile-enabled serious game for language learning on business communication - Adaptable learning activities that immerse learners into rich cultural and work related experiences - Good practices on deployment, targeting trainers Impact: increased efficiency in business communication, competitiveness, and employability; personalized language learning; enhanced appreciation of the cultural and linguistic wealth of Europe. Outcomes will be validated in Greece, Norway, Italy, Portugal, Estonia.
