The ancient crafts are cultural richness of every nation, which today is often neglected or at best becomes a tourist attraction. Through project it was intended to emphasize the importance of ancient crafts and to reflect them in modern life. During the project, the ancient crafts were dealt through a potential business perspective. Young people were able to acquire theoretical and practical knowledge in business and gain insight into their own and other countries ancient craft heritage. In the Youth Exchange project submission phase aim of the project was set: to generate interest in young people for their country's ancient crafts, by putting them in today's environment through the business perspective. Following objectives were settled down:
1. To ensure the quality of project development, its progress and conclusion.
2. To ensure a safe and equitable environment for youth exchange participants to successfully learn and develop through non-formal education methods.
3. Enable the participants of the youth exchange, through non-formal education methods, to get acquainted with the basic business issues and to promote the knowledge of the successful development of business ideas.
4. Endanger young people's interest in their country's ancient crafts.
The project involved six partner organizations from Latvia, Armenia, Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia and Lithuania, which during the youth exchange project were represented each by four participants and one group leader, in case of Latvia four participants and three group leaders. The young people who face economic, social and geographical barriers were involved in the youth exchange project as well. Participants were young people between the age of 18 and 30, as well five participants in age between 16 and 17 years were involved in the project. Participants were interested and motivated to participate in the project, they knew basic level of English and were interested in business and / or ancient crafts. Participants of the project were pupils and students, as well as those young people who have completed their studies already and is in search of work. Overall, the project involved 32 participants.
The main activity of the project was youth exchange, which took place in Latvia, Cibla district, Zvirgzdene parish, Ezernieki, rest complex "Cirma's lakeshore" during the period from 12th till 19th of May 2016. Non-formal education methods were mainly used in the project. During the first days of the exchange participants were introduced to the project idea and agenda of the youth exchange, as well via get to know each other, ice-breaking and team-building activities participants were given the opportunity to get acquainted with each other. In the further course of the project participants were invited to get acquainted with the ancient crafts and share stories. These activities were followed by topics related to the business, which complemented the business simulation game, and information on a wide range of marketing options. Later, the young people were able to compare the knowledge gained with the real business environment by consulting with six different trades. During the project time, the participants were given the opportunity to create business ideas, develop them during different activities, and defend them in 3 minutes long "lift talk".
Participants of the youth exchange benefited and extended the knowledge about the ancient crafts that allowed them to look from a different perspective on their national ancient crafts as a cultural heritage and to assess its conservation importance. On a project basis at both local and national level it has been updated artisanship cultural heritage topic and not only in Latvia, but also in the above mentioned five other countries. During the exchange young people got basic knowledge of business and were acquainted with examples of good practice. Participants gained the tools and knowledge to fight unemployment and create awareness of the use of existing materials and expertise to build own business. Similarly, young people raised their European awareness and developed their knowledge of other countries and, their cultures and traditions, and as a result became more tolerant and lenient.
