‘Semper in altum’ (always higher) is the motto of Bartłomiej Nowodworski Secondary School no 1 in Cracow and also the title of the project that will be carried out by the teachers of this school, the oldest secular school in Poland.The idea of the project is connected with four common EU objectives to address challenges in education and training systems (Europe 2020): making lifelong learning and mobility a reality, improving the quality and efficiency of education and training, promoting equity, social cohesion, and active citizenship and enhancing creativity and innovation at all levels of education and training.Our project focuses mainly on international cooperation and is tailored to the dynamic reality of the contemporary world. We have to take into account both broadening our educational offer to students whose knowledge of the Polish language is limited (e.g. Ukrainians, economic migrants’ children or refugees’ children) and providing our Polish students with opportunities that will enable them, among others, to take up studies in English. The knowledge of English is the first step to bridge the gap between the privileged and the ones threatened with social exclusion.The aim of our project is to master the professional competences of foreign language teachers and teachers of other subjects. There are nine teachers that have been chosen to take part in the project: IT teacher, Polish teacher, Mathematics teacher, teacher of French, teacher of German and four teachers of English. Each participant will take part in a chosen course: either methodology (English language teachers) or improving English (others).The main areas of the project include: foreign languages teaching and learning, new innovative curricula and methodology, and international cooperation. The expected results include: improvement of the quality of work through new innovative curricula and methodology, as well as school promotion through broader educational proposals. Methodology includes direct cooperation, working in groups as well as virtual cooperation (with the use of ICT).The international projects will provide an excellent source of good practice exchange and will result in fruitful school cooperation. The improvement of school curricula and methodology, as well as international cooperation will bring positive changes to our school on the European level.The predicted long-term benefits include further and enhanced cooperation with organizations that promote active citizenship and promoting equity, integration of school community, especially students coming from underprivileged areas/families, whom our school wants to provide with equal educational opportunities of the highest as well as attractive and modern standard. Another benefit is setting better standards of education. As a result, it is not just the school that will benefit from the project, but also the local community. We are planning to share our experience with others. We hope that international cooperation will be a useful tool for fighting with prejudice, and learning cultural diversities, thus shaping our students as aware citizens of the modern world.
