EU principles and values require all member countries to consider Environmental Protection and Policy (EPP) as an ardent strategic priority, to be studied and discussed in specialized and public forums. A study conducted by the project team suggests that there is a high interest in EPP within Europe, but that there are few opportunities which allow interested parties to interact, share and develop ideas and experiences in a proficient environment within Eastern Europe.Thus, there is currently an unfilled need for events that provide a platform for interaction and development of research on EPP, both within the applicant institution and at the local and regional (Central and Eastern Europe) level. The SCIENVIR series of conferences seeks to become a cradle for nurturing the growth of a trans-national, interdisciplinary community of academics, researchers and practitioners interested in EPP in an EU context.The project aims to foster the burgeoning of innovative and interdisciplinary research and of dialogue in the field of EU Environmental Protection and Policy.SCIENVIR addresses the EU’s need for support and input from the academic community in finding viable solutions to the complex and universal issue of providing present and future citizens with a healthy and sustainable environment.Main outputs: 2 conferences; 2 seminars; 2 abstract & contact booklets; 2 journal issues; 120 conference packages; partnerships with 3 academic journals; 1 database; 1 website.Main outcomes and impact: knowledge and research skills for academics and other participants; awareness on EPP issues among representatives of regional policy makers and businesses and NGOs; foundations for the long-term implementation of the conference; premises for establishing a multidisciplinary post-graduate teaching programme on Environmental Economics and Management; a powerful European trans-regional network of experts on EPP (boosting research in this strategic EU field).
