CONTEX:The current numbers of early school leaving (ESL) are impressive as far the EU 27 countries and non-EU countries is concerned. According to the Final Report "Reducing early school leaving: key messages and policy supports" (Nov. 2013), in the first case we have a 22.8 % and for the second 26.7 % while the native born early school leaving data at 11.6%.In particular the percentages of ESL non-EU born students in the partners countries are : Belgium 26%; France 22,7%; Italy 40,5%; Portugal 19,4 %; Norway 15,3%. According to these data the consortium decided to develop the SHIP project. OBJECTIVES:The principal objective is to reducing the ESL percentage of the students with foreign origin based on many reasons of which low education level of migrant parents can be most of the time the main one and it is a result of two important factors.Low educational level achieved in home country and different knowledge learned between origin and destination countries. To tackle this problem there are a wide array of actions that have to be taken. SHIP project wants to ensure a parents involvement in the school activities, giving them the possibility to follow step by step the activities of their children. This will be possible through improving communication between parents and schools and establishing positive educational environment at home for pupils with migrant background. PARTICIPANTS: SHIP is targeting parents with migrant background that will be identified according to their origin and the school attainments of their pupils, in key competences like reading, mathematical and scientific literacy pointed out by the "Programme for International Student Assessment" (PISA). There will be 50 parents who will make up an experimental group. On the other side SHIP will set up a control group with 50 parents. On the first group it will be implemented the largest part of the activities while the second one will be used manly as a group control and for measuring the impact of the project. DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITIESThe activates of Ship will be subdivided in Formal, Non Formal and Informal Formal activities Short intensive training course in Oslo (n) 5 days. The aims of the course are:• Sharing of the Norwegian best practices.• Exploring different models of family learning • Identify criteria for effective learning materials • Plan a tailored training program for the targeted adults • Training of the tutors Long-term teaching This phase will consist in different learning course • Language • History • Civics • ComputingBased on the agreements that will be taken with the schools, there will be also some joint classes that involve parents and childrenNon-Formal Activities. During the implementation parents will be involved in special trainings with the aim to improve their attitudes and the dialogue with their children in a learning context. There will be also some informal activities and during this the project organize multi-ethnic dinners and events in the way to increase the dialogue between parent, pupils and teachers.METHODOLOGYShip conceived the methodology according to the values and the capacity of the consortium. Due to these reasons it has been decided to be strongly focused on the relationship between parents, children and schools. Combining formal, non-formal and informal activities will make learning easier and ensure parents can gain more confidence in family-school relationship. RESULTS AND IMPACT: There will be basically two main instruments to measuring the impact: participants registration list and pupils' report cards. The consortium expects the project activities implemented on the parents will impact contributing in raising the school attainments of foreign-born experimental group by improving communication between parents and teachers and by widening parents knowledge about local educational and cultural systems. SHIP intends also to impact into local political dimension by involving local councilor in charge of education and social inclusion who then will be informed about the main results of the project. The participating organizations will encourage new working methods for reducing foreign-born pupils dropout, by sharing and implementation the Norwegians best practices. LONG TERM BENEFITS: By parents understanding of the importance of a mutual collaboration with schools and by involving other migrants communities, parents involved in the project can have a positive long term effects. On the other side, teachers by sharing the best practice, could have acquired new and complementary tools, skills and methods to work with pupils with migrant background, developing appropriate pedagogical holistic approaches. Through new learning approach the project expect that other students will have school improvements in results.
