This Seminar dealt with the role of humour in open youthwork in general and humour in intercultural context specifically. Humour plays an important role in different circumstances and is used in several ways consciously an unconsciously, both in everyday life and in societal context. Especially with regards to different cultural backgrounds this can have positive or negatives aspects, especially here misunderstanding is eminent. Experiences like on local youthwork level and within international events were initiatory to develop the seminar. This seminar hosted 18 youth worker from 4 different countries, all working professionally in open Youthwork. It took place 4 days in a youth hostel in Vienna. It looked into the phenomena of humour. Which “types” of humour are existing? Where do we find it? Can we use it on purpose in youthwork? If yes, how? How could this work in international groups? Participants learned about others and themselves and reflected upon prejudice, intolerance and racism in context of humour. Considering those different factors it will participants discussed how far humour can go, where and how borders are to be set and how you should deal with going beyond those borders in a constructive way. Thus it was aim of the seminar to raise awareness among participants about the possibilities humour has and how to recognize the dangers within it. Raising this awareness was the main desired impact, development of individual attitudes, strategies and methods were important. Methodically this seminar was highly interactive, using practise examples coming from participants, short theoretical inputs and small group work. In this sense aims were effectively increasing key competences in youth work and intense encouragement of quality of youthwork, in the full meaning of the Erasmus+ programme. An additional “side effect” was be the basic exchange of youthwork experience in working with young people with fewer opportunities.
