Salo Upper Secondary School's Project "21st century skills" will involve teachers and school staff who are in key positions when designing and implementing the new school curriculum, the school's own thematic subject modules and integrated studies and furthermore, when developing and implementing e-learning and e-testing. The teachers/school staff represent many different study fields, and therefore, will be able to bring versatile strenghts and insights into the project. There will be 6 teachers/members of school staff in the Job Shadowing - part of the project representing Finnish as Mother Tongue, Psychology/Religion, Student Councelling and School Heads. The second part of the program involves participating in Structured Courses lasting about a week, and the 5 teachers participating will represent French, History and Civics, Geography and English as a Foreign Language. Due to the poor economic situation in the town of Salo, the resources to fund in-service training have been drastically cut down, and with the help of this international educational project, the participants will be able get support for pedagogical training and chances to get acquainted with the methods and metodologies used in the hosting schools, and hence bring back new, fresh ideas about teaching, counselling and running the school. In 2016 there will be a new national core curriculum in Finnish upper secondary schools with a novelty of combining thematic subject studies that will integrate several subjects and enhance the comprehension of larger study entities. Salo Upper Secondary School wants to emphasize the importance of the 21st century skills in the designing of the new curriculum, and to get international experience in efficient methods and procedures to implement those into the curriculum. The new electronic matriculation examination will bring its own challenges into teaching, and we hope to find practical solutions on e-learning and e-testing through monitoring teaching at international partner schools. As for foreign languages, the importance of oral skills will be highlighted in the new curriculum even more than today, and it is therefore very important that foreign language teachers will be able to practise the language they teach in an authentic environment. With this project, we hope to maintain the professional skills of our staff and build 21st century education policy. We aim to reach good practices that will leave a permanent mark in the school society.
