PROJET
TERMINÉ
Sailing Democracy is a nine-day long youth exchange on the schooner Fylla, July 7-15, 2016. The project involves four countries: Turkey, Latvia, Ukraine and Denmark. Altogether 32 people will participate, amounts them youngster with fewer opportunities. The aim of this project is to combat prejudice, to promote social intercultural competences, and also democracy and peace education in everyday life thus enhancing active citizenship and youth initiatives in the future. It is more than ever very important for young people to meet across borders in order to share their culture and background and get an insight into each other´s living conditions and culture. Due to massive amount of refugees that enters most European countries now, it enhances the need of meeting face to face to combat prejudice and to discuss the values in our democratic society. Winston Churchill said: “Democracy is the worst form of government except for all the others.” Was he right? In this project young people will experience mutual responsibility in the small sailing community and reflect on a democratic lifestyle and values. Active participation will be linked with peace education. Peace education is meant as the process of acquiring the values, the knowledge and developing the attitudes, skills, and behaviors to live in harmony with oneself, with others, and with the natural environment. (Wikipedia) The schooner Fylla has very limited space, and most actions have consequences. E.g. there is a limited amount of electricity and water, so you have to think about how much you use. This is one of the reasons why there is no bath on board. Everybody has to contribute to the small international society on board by cooking, cleaning and sailing - otherwise it has consequences for the community. Many rules are made to prevent disasters if an emergency appears. This is why night watching is necessary. During the night everybody takes turns on two hours’ shift watching the traffic in the harbour, observing hawser etc. The purpose of all the rules might not be obvious at the beginning, but after some experience, it will be clearer and clearer to everybody why some of the rules are needed. A lot of parallel things in everyday life on the ship can be transferred to everyday life outside. This experience can help people to be more aware of their own actions and their consequences. Relating one’s own actions on the ship and the experiences in the society as a whole with the theme of democracy and peace education can have a very strong impact on each individual´s future actions and personal development. This will be enhanced through the fact that the young people live in an international community on board the ship. Thus their European identity will be strengthened. The result and impact of this project will be visual on each organisations website, on a Sailing Democracy 2016´s blog, on Facebook and in other medias.
