“Exposure to Europe from an early age”
Our school is a small, rural pre-school in the Auvergne mountains, which currently has 45 students and 2 teachers for two classes. The local population is not very exposed to Europe. Our goal was to put this project into place so that each student can develop his/her curiosity; his/her motivation to discover the world, cultures, and languages but also develop the values of tolerance, open-mindedness, and respect for others.
Our aim was to promote the learning of English as a key language to communicate between European countries, while exposing students to other European languages. We have prepared a school-wide English language curriculum for the school and the local group of schools (5 classes in three schools), which will help us to pursue these goals in forthcoming years. We introduced many cultural aspects from other countries using songs, nursery rhymes, dances, and short stories – whether through eTwinning with our Greek partner or as part of our immersion program in Ireland. This has allowed us to introduce our students to the use of information and communication technology.
Our immersion program in Ireland has allowed our team to bond and has invigorated our work around a collective project for the study of English and the discovery of other European cultures.
This training program has not only helped us to consolidate our linguistic skills, but also made our pedagogical practices evolve thanks to our exchanges with Irish and Greek teachers, our better understanding of European cultures, and our increasing proficiency in eTwinning. Our teachers have improved their abilities to collaborate with an international team.
Finally, this project has enabled our students to start building European citizenship by sharing a common culture.
