La Palma, whose historical name is San Miguel de La Palma, is an island of the Canary Islands, belonging to the Spanish State. Our institution is headquartered in the municipality of San Andrés y Sauces, in the northeast of the island. Our town is known for its lush vegetation and by the forest of Los Tilos, exceptional forest of Laurissilva, forest of the tertiary age which was extended across Europe, which now is reduced to a group of islands which include La Palma, as well as being the place of birth of the Biosphere World Research of the island of La Palma.
Estonia has a medieval old town, declared by UNESCO Heritage of Humanity, the best preserved in Northern Europe. Tallinn could be considered one of the best living class museums, since its 700 years of history have left traces of numerous styles and architectural trends. Since 2004, Estonia is member of the European Union.
Rompiendo Barreras project, is based on a double youth exchange between two European institutions.
The main objectives of this project are learning new forms of active participation in society, the use of a foreign language (English) to promote communication and cooperation with people of other nationalities, as well as the acquisition of the concept of European citizenship and the values that it represents.
In this project, 22 young people aged 14 to 19, with fewer opportunities, by geographical circumstances, economic causes and 4 young workers participated in each exchange activity.
The planned activities were a clear attempt to show the way of life and culture of the youth of each organization, using a method of activities, through non-formal and informal education. In the project exchange activities took place in each participating country. Thus, youth can be put in the situation of the other, to know its culture, its customs, social, natural and economic resources of their populations and sharing knowledge about youth participation, which at the same time acquire the vision of a common Europe.
Among the benefits that will be available in the medium and long term are: awareness of being European citizens, bringing them to different socio-cultural realities of Europe's young people, (especially in the participants of the island of La Palma, due to its situation of distance with respect to the continent) and the exchange of knowledge and experiences among the youth in terms of ways to participate in their community. And so encouraging encounter, information, communication, the promotion of leisure and free time, active participation, personal development and education in values (no sexism, non-violence, respect for the environment, pacifism, solidarity among peoples, anti-racism and the integration of disadvantaged youth socially).
From our point of view, both the participation of the beneficiary population in the project, their involvement and the development of activities that comprise it has been really satisfactory, and hope to make future projects on the same line. In general, this project has contributed to the general objective. It is youth participation, cultural diversity and European citizenship. Having as priorities the global and environmental challenges. To promote the knowledge of its people, culture, ethnography, environment, history, architecture, and in general of their customs and traditions. Fostering ecological, anti-war, behaviors, and a commitment for a more sustainable growth. Developed his understanding of the diversity of European languages and cultures. This has led to greater involvement of youth both in the organized, as in social and community life activities.
In terms of specific objectives, it can be said that through these activities was achieved to develop a program of healthy leisure favouring personal and social development of the youth, through physical activities, such as sport, the expression and body movement, hiking, equality workshops, workshops of astronomy, creating videos, workshops with recycled materials , cultural tours, museums, they staged the cavalcade of the three wise men, they were able to enjoy routes between orchards and forests.
It got to promote on the one hand, the knowledge of the natural environment that surrounds us, and on the other, respect the same, in order to raise awareness among young people about the need for protection of our environmental resources and expand their knowledge about our landscape.
