Revitalizing Small Remote Schools for LifeLong Distance e-Learning

European citizens living in remote rural or insular areas are often excluded frommainstream educational activities easily accessible by people living in larger cities. Thekey goal of this project is to show in actual practice and by a scalable example, that it ispossible and economically feasible to substantially supplement the meagre andsometimes irrelevant educational opportunities normally available to residents of remoteand insular regions in the EU: (a) through modern ICT-based distance education andtraining for young pupils and adults alike; (b) using innovative thorough technologicallyand methodologically approach; (c) utilizing existing infrastructure at otherwise decliningschools and revitalizing their operation in order to become multi-purpose local learningcentres accessible to all; (d) establishing learning partnerships between schools, training centres, firms, research facilities and universities to their mutual benefit forpersonally meaningful educational activities and courses; (e) producing exemplaryeducational material to last beyond the project, that would be otherwise lacking in theseregions and would lead people either to exclusion or to migration. The project will produce methodologies for the comprehensive open learner-driven ICTbaseddistance learning framework with respect to (a) enabling members of remote ruralcommunities to identify their learning needs, (b) enabling educators to design, createand deliver apt educational material, (c) a web based Distance Learning Service thatprovides tools for setting up and managing courses, for accessing, retrieving, creating, storing educational content, social tools for interacting with and establishing onlinecommunities with common educational concerns at national and European levels, (d) aset of tested model courses and material available for other interested communities. Inthe framework of the project School Education and Adult Education levels will beaddressed, although due to the open end of the DL framework there is a potential ofadapting and further using it
