REgional exchanges and policy making for protecting and valorising biodiVERSity in Europe
Date du début: 31 déc. 2009,
Date de fin: 30 déc. 2012
Ecosystems have gradually been converted through the expansion of human activities and the introduction/invasion of new species. As a result, species and genetic diversity have declined. Regional and local authorities can organise land planning and regulate human activities in order to preserve biodiversity (natural area protection, greens corridors, conservation and valorisation of species and varieties,...). REVERSE aims to improve, by means of interregional cooperation, the effectiveness of regional development policies in the area of biodiversity conservation and valorisation, in order to REVERSE biodiversity loss on their territories. Partners will exchange experiences and knowledge on biodiversity conservation and valorisation measures. Less experienced regions will be invited to match more experienced ones on a win-to-win basis. Project's activities will focus on identifying the best good practices in each partner's territory, which will then be presented during site visits and interregional seminars, in the field of land planning and natural heritage conservation measures, of uses of biodiversity for adapting to climate change, and of sustainable management of biodiversity.Identified good practices will be made available for transfer to other regional and local authorities through a good practice guide, presenting appropriate themes, territories, partners, indicators for biodiversity conservation across Europe. Specific recommendations and an action plan for reversing biodiversity loss will enable to transfer the project's results into regional policies. Result dissemination to general public and policy makers will contribute to create an interregional network for conserving and valorising biodiversity, open to non partner stakeholders. The Leader partner - the Regional Council of Aquitaine (Fr), Umbria Region (It), Basque Government (Sp), Region of Bremen (De), Region of Murcia (Sp),The Prefectoral authority of Drama-Kavala-Xanthi (Gr), and the Regional Prefecture Forest Directorate of Chania (Gr) will cooperate in order to provide good practices and recommendations for reversing biodiversity loss. The regional agency for the development and innovation of agriculture in Lazio (It), Bio dAquitaine (Fr) – a public law body involved in organic farming, the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania (Gr) will be in charge of identifying good practices of biodiversity conservation in link with economic activities. The Bremerhaven Technology-Transfer-Centre (De), the Research Institute of Plant Production Piestany (Slovaquia), the Regional Natural Areas Conservatory of Aquitaine (Fr) and the Estonian University of Life Sciences will provide tools and expertise. The Executive Agency of the Ministry of Environment and Water of Bulgaria (Bg) remain a partner of REVERSE project but this partner has no active involvment in the project. Achievements: REVERSE project, funded by Europe, aims to promote biodiversity at European scale, by favouring positive action in territories. REVERSE consists in an exchange of experiences between 14 European Partners involved in the protection of biodiversity with different scopes. The project focuses on 3 key topics: 1)Agriculture& biodiversity, 2)Tourism& biodiversity, 3)Land planning& biodiversity. By the end of 2012, several documents will be offered to provide relevant tools to local councils and decision-makers to take account of biodiversity into their policies.1) A book gathering 47 successful regional case studies in Europe, for enhancing biodiversity and boosting economic development. 2) In each Reverse topic, Agriculture, Tourism and Land planning, a charter including European context and political recommendations will be proposed on a European scale in order to unite stakeholders in a joint project to preserve biodiversity.
