Regional development plan for use of Atlantic wave energy (WAVENERGY)
Date du début: 4 janv. 2007, Date de fin: 14 mars 2008 PROJET  TERMINÉ

The objective of the WAVENERGY project is to create a plan to define the actions and priorities to be carried out for the development of wave energy. This plan will be very useful for regions that wish to seriously aim towards this kind of energy and will be made available to the public and organisations through a web page. The first phase of the project consists of drawing up the aforementioned plan, which will contain the following information: the natural conditions required to generate wave energy, the advantages of this kind of energy, types of financing, methodology to define the location of energy generators, conditioning factors, variety of existing devices, etc. This project will focus special attention on ports, because they have an infrastructure with an enormous impact on the related environment and their facilities could be used to build wave energy generation systems.Later, in the second phase, the project will include a pilot project that will test the feasibility study methodology to implement wave energy collection systems in different ports. This methodology will be tested in the specific case of the industrial docks of Granadilla in the south of Tenerife. The study will assess the most suitable locations to set up the energy generating facilities and the different systems that have been developed in the market, defining which ones are the most suitable for the coastal marine environment in each place. Achievements: • Producing a reference report comparing different systems for generating energy from the sea, with their advantages. This 25-page document, "A comparative study of different sources of marine renewable energy". • Producing a reference report analysing in detail the production of wave energy. The report analyses and compares the various systems from the point of view of both productivity and environmental protection. • It inventories the various existing technologies and their future prospects. • Producing a summary of the natural parameters to take into account when installing a wave energy system: energy, climate and geographical parameters. • Producing a 19-page report, "Definition of location criteria": study of the strengths and weaknesses of each technology, analysis of the infrastructure necessary to make the best use of these energy sources. • Producing a map of the most appropriate areas for the production of this type of energy. The zone with the highest potential proved to be the Galician coast. • Studying the Spanish and French legislation regulating the installation of wave energy generation equipment. • Identifying sources of funding for renewable energy projects. • Producing a summary of the natural and technological parameters to take into account when installing a wave energy system. • Preparing a manual, a single document containing all the previous reports. • Putting the study methodology and the results of preliminary studies into practice in the port of Granadilla
