Youth projects aimed at peacebuilding often fall short on addressing the historical memory of a conflict. When legacies of violence are not addressed, historical wounds are left to fester and diverging narratives of an otherwise common past continue to haunt relations between antagonizing communities (e.g. negative stereotypes, fixed enemy images and propaganda in the Caucasus region). Reconciliation and Dealing with the Past, by contrast, do focus on these aspects - trying to take the 'historical sting' out of the conflict and aiming at empathy and understanding of The Other through dialogue. The project would like to introduce this concept to youth based organisations from the Caucasus region combined with experiences of Western and Central Europe. We hope to trigger a process in which civil society organisations start dedicating their work to reconciling conflict parties using a grass-root people-to-people approach. The objectives of this TC are as following:• To introduce approaches to reconciliation work and Dealing with the Past (DwP) as a concept in youth-led conflict transformation processes• To empower youth workers and youth to critically reflect on the legacy of the past of their communities on their societies, daily lives and identities• To foster commitment of youth workers and young people in shaping nonviolent and participatory societies• To inspire inclusive and youth-led follow-up projects dedicated to reconciliation work in order to strengthen grass-root conflict transformation processes As a result, we will have trained 24 youth workers in reconciliation work and dealing with the past in the context of peacebuilding and dialogue; created and maintained an interactive forum on these topics; fostered and solidified a network of dedicated partners inspired to dedicate work to grassroots reconciliation projects themselves. The methodology of the course is based on non-formal, experiental learning: class presentations, workshops, discussions and debate, games, a masterclass and a study visit. The project consists of one educational activity: a training course on reconciliation work and dealing with the past as an approach in youth work. The TC will take place in September in Kobuleti, Georgia between and will bring together 24 youth workers from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Germany, the Netherlands and Poland.
