Tour du Valat is located in the heart of the Rhône delta, in the Camargue (Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur Region), at 30km from Arles (50 000 inhabitants). The Tour du Valat estate extends over 2,600 hectares, of which 1,100ha have been classified as a Regional Nature Reserve. The foundation is directed to the public benefit since 1978 and is run by an international council of scientists and nature conservation specialists. Tour du Valat develops programmes of research, conservation and management of Mediterranean wetlands on its estate, on other estates of Camargue (public or private estates) et all over the Mediterranean region. About 60 permanent staff are working at Tour duValat (scientists, engineers, technicians and administratives). This team is increased by trainees from different universities in Europe and in the Mediterranean countries. Through our programmes, the Volunteer work will be unique. The Volunteer will approach the world of the nature conservation, discovering the work of the scientist and wetland managers. From our side, we will allow to young Eureopeans to discover the world of the research and nature conservation. In the framework on this project, the European Volunteer Service will join one of our different teams (under the responsibility of the Scientific director), in order to follow them during their work, according to the periods : flamingoes ringing, monitoring of European Pond terramin, ornithology, botany… Tour du Valat is under the “35 hours contract” and the volunteer will benefit of the same advantages than staff (holidays, week-end). However the volunteer should be adapted to the field constraints. All along the year, students and trainees are hosting at Tour du Valat. This would be a chance for the volunteer for discovering the french culture, and also Mediterranean culture.
