REAPYC - Baltic Sea training on alcohol policy for youth is happening after as successful Eastern European and Caucasus REAPYC conference in Chisinau, Moldova in 2013. The harmful use of alcohol is considered to be one of the main risk factors for poor health globally. It is estimated that 2.5 million people worldwide die of alcohol related causes, including 320.000 young people between 15 and 29 years of age, which represents 9% of all people in that group. Europe is the region with the highest alcohol consumption. Amongst young people, early initiation of alcohol use has been shown to be linked to later binge drinking, heavy drinking and alcohol-related problems. Therefore, it is very important that young people are aware of the current situation and try to be active in the field of prevention with purpose of changing this worrying reality. It is crucial for youth organisations to be involved in prevention interventions which are classified as effective evidence-based prevention practices, as they are the key stakeholders. This project addresses the need to upgrade their knowledge and skills in purpose to improve effectiveness of their interventions. The main idea of activities like the 2nd REAPYC in Lithuania is to build capacity in order to prevent and reduce alcohol-related harm among young people and the broader population. Capacity will be built on three main topics: advocacy for more comprehensive alcohol policy, youth research on alcohol and evidence-based alcohol interventions in youth organizations. We expect to gather up to 30 participant between 18 and 30 years of age, from the extended Baltic region - namely Poland, Lithuania, Estonia and Finland. These participants will originate from a diversity of backgrounds, including health sciences, social sciences and any other background, provided they already work on alcohol or are willing to do so after the trainingThe training is expected to have a total duration of 7 days (with two travel days included), in August 2016. Our planed activities will also foster networking between organizations, and encourage the establishment of transnational partnerships. We expect to empower young people to apply their knowledge back at home, and we will provide coaching and support to those requesting it. We will encourage participants to provide us a summary of their projects and progress after the training for our future reference. The project is in line with Erasmus+ programme objectives, mainly assuring youth participation (the conference is organized by young people for young people), multiculturalism (understanding of intercultularity and cultural patterns that have effect in our attitudes and behaviors) and European citizenship (through civil society dialogue and focus on dialogue with decision-makers). Our activity is focusing mainly on the mobility of young people, which will provide an opportunity to raise the competences of the participants in advocacy for more comprehensive alcohol policy, youth research on alcohol and evidence-based alcohol interventions in youth organizations. Additionally, this activity aims to raise the quality of youth work on the specific issue of alcohol consumption, both within the participating organisations as well as within the wider youth field in the countries, from which the participants are coming. LiMSA goal is also to promote evidence-based policy developments in youth work, and one of your objectives for this activity is to stimulate this kind of approach also in the field of public health, specifically in alcohol policy.
