Qualification for doing business international in SMEs

SMEs must position themselves internationally, to remain competitive in the long run. While Scandinavian SMEs are already very active in foreign trade in the Baltic region, there exists a great need to catch up with the growth opportunities for SMEs, particularly in Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. Owners, managers and professionals of the SMEs in particular need language skills, knowledge of international markets, country-specific circumstances, foreign corporate structures and socio-cultural competence. Staff with such skills and international experience does hardly exist in the majority of SMEs is not available. In the framework of various projects individual training modules for SME foreign trade have been developed. These innovative results have been bundled into a challenging course, supplemented by missing content, tested in practice and then transferred into 32 regions from 9 Baltic Sea countries. The course also includes an optional internship in an SME as well as business English. Project partners are the Hanseatic Parliament with 7 partners and their educational institutions from 6 countries. Target groups of the project are: + Owners of small and medium-sized enterprises + Management and technical staff of SMEs + Younger workers after completion of vocational training + Students intending to pursue a career in SMEs + Unemployed workers to improve their skills to this job opportunities + Professionals who are released from other sectors and may intervene with these additional skills in SMEs.
