TERMINÉ
Our school has been very active in various international projects, and we are highly motivated to educate ourselves. Last autumn our teachers were presented with an idea of receiving continuing education abroad, and many were interested. This group of teachers then discussed the needs of our institution and looked up suitable courses.A prominent theme emerged in the discussions: Finland is receiving more and more immigrants, and therefore the percentage of students with immigrant backgrounds in our school is in the rise. This brings forth new challenges not only in the mainstream education classroom, but also in supported and preparatory instruction for immigrants. The project “Purista” is based on the methodology of communal learning, which is an active learning method, similar to phenomenon based learning. Communal learning, in short, is a process where a group of students tries to find an explanation for a phenomenon or an issue. Both of these methods, communal learning and phenomenon based learning, are essential in the new Finnish National Core Curriculum of 2016. The theme of immigration as a phenomenon is important for all participating teachers, as the everyday work in the classrooms requires new skills, and it is also crucial to understand immigration from the global perspective. The goal of the project is to be able to understand and explain this phenomenon, and to acquire new skills and ideas to handle intercultural issues in the classroom. The central characteristics of phenomenon based learning are goal setting, putting emphasis on the study and thought process, problem-based learning, shared expertise, building information, improving cognitive and metacognitive skills, and taking responsibility for learning. There are certain objectives that each participant of this project share: We all want to acquire new teaching methods, improve our language skills and get new international contacts. The participating teachers all agree that there is a need to receive continuing education on the themes of this project. With this instruction, participants will improve their language skills and become aware of their own learning processes. Seven teachers will take part in the project: Two teachers of instruction preparing immigrants for basic education and a teacher for supported teaching for immigrants ("Flight and migration" - Turkey & "Diversity in Education" - Portugal), two language teachers ("Creative Activities and Motivating Materials for Teaching English" - England & "General Spanish for teachers" - Spain), a home economics teacher ("Outdoors education for all" - Romania) and an arts teacher ("Discovering Renaissance Art in Florence" -Italy).The participants will gain expertise, motivation and language skills. The courses will offer concrete ideas, tools and teaching methods for teaching. The experiences will be utilized in new phenomenon based learning projects that break the traditional boundaries between school subjects. We will share our experiences with colleagues in Turku and abroad. As immigration continues to increase in Finland, we believe that educating ourselves beforehand will help integrate these immigrants into our society. A small step towards this goal is taken, as the integration of immigrant students into mainstream education will become easier with the help of this project. This project will make us question our own teaching methods and grow towards the spirit of the new National Core Curriculum. The new curriculum has activated us to think about how we teach and act as teachers. Therefore, the timing is extremely fruitful, and this project will benefit us and our school greatly. We will network and tie international contacts that can be utilized in teaching. For example, the experiences of social integration of immigrants in Turkey will help us in our daily work. Our school has suffered from a low profile, and we want to make a change. We believe that this project will polish our reputation as an institution that has intercultural expertise, is socially equal, caring, immigration friendly and supportive of those who study Finnish as a second language. The project will also strengthen our strong suits that include instruction in many foreign languages, the abundant and apt use of information technology, and the rich tradition of studying drama.
