Public health Education Reform For Equity in Quality of Training

This project seeks to understand the range of reforms required by schools of public health(SPHs) in order to achieve accreditation. It then seeks to identify practicable actions which can be undertaken by the schools to realise these reforms. The focus of the research will be on second cycle academic programmes of public health with a heavy focus within The CEE region and the Former Soviet Union with western European schools also being included. The project aims to understand the reforms needed and also the mechanisms of implementing those reforms so that any future recommended reforms are grounded on the feasibility of their implementation. The proposal outlines a (macro) quantitative examination and comparison of the gaps between the existing levels of quality in education throughout the region and those levels imposed under an accreditation system. The proposal then outlines a (micro) qualitative examination of the gaps in representative schools in the region. Both of these elements will produce a series of recommendations on the reforms required across the region. These recommendations will then be fed-back to the schools in question through a workshop to understand whether they are achievable, feasible and practicable. The research elements along with the the results of the workshop will form the basis of one major publication and the submission of two academic papers. The project will also generate a website in English (but integrating google translation) for interaction with the participants as well as displaying the on-going progress of the project and research results. The project seeks to be the first stepping stone in raising the standards of public health second cycle education across the wider EHEA region in an attempt to level the playing field in terms of transparent and demonstrable quality assurance. As SPHs are academic units, it is hoped the results from the project can also be utilised by other academic training units across the EHEA.
