Unit 1 at Peder Skrivares Skola is located in Varberg. The city is moving towards a future where it will undergo great change, due to the building of a new railway tunnel, the harbor being moved outside the city giving place to a new part of Varberg, called Västerport, to be built. This transformation is a part of the European Union’s program of infrastructure, focusing on communication and transportation. From an EU-level to a national level, a red thread of sustainable development, entrepreneurship, innovations and participation runs through the entire urban development project. This is taken into consideration in the municipality of Varbergs´ own “Vision 2025” and then brought into the administration and down to a school level where a European development plan is created. The entire city development project is calculated to be finished in 2035. Our school has representatives in the project and our students play a big role in forming and developing the new part of the city. We predict that Varberg will be a work-intensive area for many years to come where specific requirements on employees are important. Many of the employees will come from other parts of Europe and even the world, which will allow both the commerce- and the restaurant business to increase. Our school has this year introduced an international profile, where we want the lessons to be permeated by both an international and a transnational perspective. The labor market has moved from being local to global. Businesses are demanding that their employees have the right qualifications to suit this new global work force. In line with EU´s educational goals for 2020, business, entrepreneurial learning and internationalization should be a vital part of the education. This should also enable our educational system to stay updated on the requirements and qualifications employers have. We spend a lot of time and effort on developing strong contacts between the school and businesses, an entrepreneurial learning, and internationalization. As a part of this, we would like to have a project where students do their work-practice in a foreign country. During a two-year period, 36 students from our Business- and Administration program and the Restaurant- and Food program, will do their two-week long work practice in France and Austria. The students will also host students coming to Sweden from France and Austria for their work practice. During this project the students will keep in touch via phone, Skype and e-mail. They will also keep in touch with their assigned workplaces. There will also be extra English courses given that include the terminology used within the different occupations. A sociocultural course will be held at our school in order to teach the students about the country they are going to visit. We will also implement a pedagogical part of this exchange. Eight teachers, four from each program, will together with their colleges in France and Austria form a group in which they will create an efficient and evaluation tool, that can be used to evaluate each student during their work practice. The tool should facilitate student evaluation both locally and in another country and it should be able to be used in future exchange programs. We wish to share our project and its results with the rest of our school. We also want to share it publically using educational fares, newspaper articles and our page on Facebook. We will spread the information about our project to the school administration through the groups working with the city development. Our international approach and perspective on the business and restaurant function will be considered in this process. By using new working methods and having an updated knowledge of the local business, we want to reduce the amount of defections (students quitting or changing educational programs) from the high school programs that participate in the project to less than 1 percent. We also want the exchange program to encourage the students with the knowledge that they recieve extended knowledge of the English language, that they are more employable, and that they feel as they are a part of the European work market. (European Citizenship). All this fits well into EU’s vision for the year 2020, Varberg’s Vision of the year 2025 and our school’s goals for development of the educational system. Evaluation of student accomplishments and projects will take place continuously throughout the project. Inquiries will be sent out both prior to the exchange program and after. The result will show in the number of students who have defected, the ability to grade the students, long-term statistics from SCB of high school students being employed or having moved on to higher education. The students will receive a Europass and it will be written in to their final grade report when graduating. Our project is run and organized by the project group together with teachers from each of the programs participating.
