Our centre has a high rate of student failure, especially in the first year of ESO. Located in the Madrid commuter zone, 35km from the capital, the area has suffered a downturn in its social-economic level in recent years which has had a direct result in the educational and work-related expectations of our students. The high percentage of students from immigrant families is another relevant factor as many experience difficulties with social and cultural adaptation. With this in mind, our project aims to achieve the following: - Improve the quality of education - Guarantee equal opportunities for all students no matter what their cultural background our social-economic situation. - Develop students´ characters encouraging them to become responsible European citizens. From these main points we have developed some more specific objectives which are somewhat ambitious but, at the same time, realistic. In order to achieve these objectives, training in the following areas is required: new technologies, new methodologies and improvement of teachers´ linguistic skills. Five candidates from different departments have been put forward to attend five training courses in various European countries: United Kingdom (2), Belgium (1) and the Czech Republic (2), at an apprximate cost of 6.775 euros over 2 years. This group of teachers hope to take the first steps towards the development of a new and more attractive curriculum for students which encourages them to participate more. The directive team hope that this has a direct result on the academic results of the students and, especially for 1º ESO, reduces the failure rate and in the medium term, the rate of early school leavers. However, we also hope to see a positive impact on families, their local environment and the teaching staff through the use of new methodological and technological tools and their career development. Lastly, we hope that this project spawns new projects that help to strengthen the European dimension of our centre, through collaborations and strategic alliances with other European centres.
