Promotion of Learning of Less Used European Languages to Youth on the Move
Date du début: 1 nov. 2012,

In the strategic framework ET 2020 enhancing language learning is seen as a priority to improve the quality and efficiency of education and training. Today nearly 300.000 vocational and higher education students are spending yearly part of their education abroad within the EU member countries. This figures will almost double from 2014 when the new programme “Erasmus for All” proposed by European Commission starts. Mobility participants are often taking preparatory courses at home or in the host country but they may still face cultural and language barriers during their placement. In order to overcome these obstacles, they usually select the host country by the language being spoken there just after the learning benefits. So, they are most probably one of the largest groups of people willing to learn new languages. Only addressing the young people would guarantee the reinforcement of the acquisition of less used European languages and their conservation on long term. Nevertheless, with English becoming prevalently the main communication language across EU, many Member States are facing the same problem – the lack of interest in learning their national languages. To improve this situation the consortium will elaborate promotional models by analysing existent practices of promotion of language learning through EU countries, identifying examples of best practices and adapting them for the use through the dedicated promotional website that will be developed within the project. Furthermore, an online language testing tool will be developed and added to the website. The promotional website will be open to new courses and course providers with the aim to become a reference point for all target groups interested in learning or promoting less used European languages. The larger target group of young mobility participants will be addressed through other WEB 2.0 platforms dedicated to the promotion of Erasmus and Leonardo da Vinci mobility.
