The project "Volunteer project in the service for peace" was prepared by the ASF Association in Poland in cooperation with the sending organization from Ukraine – Akziją Spokuty Sarady Myru – and three hosting organizations – the Association of Polish Knights of Malta leading Maltese Centre for Children with Disabilities and Their Families, Grodzka Gate – NN Theatre and Jewish Community in Warsaw. The aim of the project is to help volunteers in gaining experiences abroad for reaching an international understanding, intensifying intercultural education, deepening historical memory and social inclusion of people with disabilities, minorities. Working in socially diverse environments and having contact with people of all ages – children with disabilities, youth, elderly people (victims of National Socialism and people in need) volunteers will achieve the objectives of social justice, tolerance and intergenerational dialogue. The project has been planned for a period of fifteen months. The project is dedicated to three young volunteers from Ukraine. They are interested in Poland, Polish-Ukrainian intercultural exchange program, exchange with German representatives, history and neighborhood policy and in particular in daily activities of hosting organizations. While choosing the participants for this projects we paid attention to their motivation to participate in the program, so they can expand experiences and skills. The participants of the project will spend one year in Poland, they will work in tandem with German volunteers in hosting organizations in three different cities: Warsaw, Lublin and Krakow. Volunteers will dive into Polish, Jewish, German and Ukrainian culture, they will work on minimizing stereotypes in local societies. In all hosting organizations volunteers’ activities will have the character of support of full-time employees. In Grodzka Gate – NN Theatre in Lublin volunteers’ activities will be connected with the history and policy of Lublin region. In Jewish Community volunteer’s tasks will be aimed at intercultural education through discovering Jewish culture, interreligious and intergenerational dialogue. In Maltese Centre volunteer will help children with special needs (autism, cerebral palsy, genetic defects). Except daily tasks in the hosting organizations we foreseen for volunteers possibility to realize their own projects. The project is based on non-formal education: volunteers will learn through practice, participation in workshops, structured dialogue (debates, consultations, discussions etc.), experience exchange, evaluation. Evaluation tools will be also used to control the quality of the project. By participating in annual volunteer program, our volunteers will have the opportunity to acquire key competences mentioned in Youthpass: linguistic, organizational, social, interpersonal competences. They will get knowledge about history and culture of Polish and other nations, get skills in the field of pedagogy, education, social care. New competences and skills will be valuable in the long-term perspective on the labor market. They will make participants more aware of their role and help them to be an active citizens. Each volunteer will have a chance to minimize stereotypes, to become more flexible, to learn how to find compromise and stay tolerant towards others which will be in a way his/her contribution to peace, service for peace. The project will have a positive impact not only on its participants but also on the indirect recipients of their activities: the local community and partner organizations. The local community will get to know more about Ukrainian culture, about Erasmus + program, about principles of volunteer work, that may change people’s perception of the world, their attitude. Partner organizations will gain a new perspective, experience and new ideas of volunteers. That will enrich them and stimulate their development. Promotion of the results of this project in blogs, websites, and other electronic media will bring long-term impact by deepening interest in the idea of volunteering as instrument for gaining peace in Europe and its neighborhood.
