Project Background:Our school mission includes a strong interest in participating in Europe-wide student exchange programmes. For successful participation, we do not merely want to rely on our current ‘cultural skill set’ – we aim to improve significantly our staff’s inter-cultural expertise. To date, we have learned much from various kinds of contact with other cultures and communities – about others and about ourselves – and we have been able to communicate some of this knowledge to our students. Moreover, some students have joined us on our various trips to other countries. We expect to get new contacts to other schools which have the same aim in question of this topic. These seminars, which are part of our European education are extremely well suited for establishing contacts with potential future project partners – i.e. contacts with schools which are planning to organize similar exchange projects. Project goals: It is clear that the student exchange programme in our primary school [Grundschule] is a success. We now want to take the next step and improve our staff’s project management know-how and thereby raise their inter-cultural expertise. Number and profile of participants:There are four members of the teaching staff, who have been involved in the organization of the current exchange programme already – some of them for many years. All these teachers are keenly interested to expand on their expertise for international project management and to raise their inter-cultural awareness and skill set. These teachers are eager to pursue relevant training in other countries. They are also prepared to undertake languages courses for improving their extant foreign language skills. It should be noted, though, that such language courses would be enhancing currently satisfactory competence in their relevant foreign languages. The four teachers are members of the Erasmusplus-Teams of our school and they aim to work as mentors in our school and other schools close-by. Jointly and separately, their Europe-oriented work will have positive influence over colleagues, students and parents. In particular, colleagues will find that they are part of a „Europa-Schule“, students will be exposed to new ideas in lessons, and parents will be exposed to – and hopefully thereby absorb – information about other cultures via their children’s experiences. Project method: Participation in inter-cultural project management training; participation in foreign language courses by direct immersion (i.e. in other countries). The staff at our school will have the opportunity to raise their inter-cultural awareness and expertise via participation in training courses designed to improve project management skills. The positive effect of such training will reach into the class room. One key premise is that sustained contact with other cultures ought not to be considered a rarefied event. The presence of our Erasmusplus-Team will ensure the establishment of regular and lively contacts between our school and schools in other countries.Description of objectives and results, as well as long-term impact:The seminar for project management in inter-cultural exchange programmes will help establish regular international contacts. We fully expect further that the seminar experience will increase the effectiveness and attractiveness of our projects. The seminar will provide an additional motivational boost for those involved to continue their international and inter-cultural engagement. Such fresh input into current structures will lead to renewed élan on the part of the participants and such enthusiasm for European thinking and society is likely to be infectious for colleagues. In turn, this will be beneficial for students in many areas of their lives, and it will expand their capacity for tolerance and their knowledge of other countries. In essence, this sort of influence and expansion of mind is in service of peaceful living together – and not just on a smaller, local scale (although it does that, too). It contributes to a European peace – something which we will need to tend to in these times of refugee influx and which will need thoughtful, inter-culturally experienced and educated people to sustain it.
