Project Management for Cross-Cultural Exchange Projects in Europe

The 3rd Lyceum of Trikala is a secondary school in the Greek state sector. The title of the programme we wish to participate in is: “Project Management for Cross-Cultural Exchange Projects in Europe” and it will take place in Teneriffe. It is a six-day seminar and two additional days will be necessary for travelling. The host organization is the Ifel Institute, an educational organization with much experience in both the private and public sectors and which in recent years has been very active in the promotion and organization of European programmes. The five members of teaching staff from our school who wish to participate are all from different disciplines but they have common aims, namely the desire to develop greater intercultural understanding as well as the thirst for knowledge pertaining to innovative approaches to teaching. This new knowledge will be beneficial not only for the students in their classes and the staff with whom they have direct contact, but also for the wider community in which they live and interact. In an increasingly international and multicultural Europe, it is essential that people of all ages are made aware of other cultures and ways of life. Our school is searching for ways to equip our students for the extremely competitive and ever-changing European work market and we see this teacher-training programme as a great opportunity to furnish the educators of our establishment with the necessary skills and approaches to meet these new demands. We as teachers have learnt that you never stop learning and that you can never be perfect in any field, however you can and must constantly strive to improve. We feel the need to enhance our foreign language skills and our cultural knowledge in order to be able to become better teachers as well as effective multipliers and disseminators of this newly-acquired knowledge. Another invaluable result of our participation in this programme will, we hope, be the birth of a number of European projects under the auspices of Erasmus+ in which our staff and students will participate actively, thereby directly gaining access to cross-cultural knowledge and experience and thus becoming more sensitive, aware and understanding towards their fellow Europeans.Despite the fact that Greece has recently been inundated with flows of refugees, unfortunately research on cross-cultural exchanges in this country is, to date, almost non-existent. Teachers are therefore faced with the necessity to become more culturally aware and to enrich their knowledge, adapt to the demands of the present situation and update their qualifications. Consequently, they have to be provided with innovative educational opportunities in this field. Also, they need to be able to recognize the factors that constitute a safe intercultural constructive classroom environment while at the same time be aware of their students’ talents and gifts in order to adopt suitable educational practices. Therefore, they should create a learning environment which promotes self-awareness, self acceptance and self-evaluation.All in all, this mobility project generates professionalism resulting in promoting innovation and quality in education. It will give beneficiaries a different perspective by shedding light on the key role of education in the learners’ lives and it will facilitate objectivity and the transfer of knowledge, to say nothing of the fact that it will provide the participants with opportunities to successfully develop their full intellectual, vocational and personal potential and their understanding of what it means to be European.
