National Dong Hwa University (NDHU) was established in July 1994 in Hualien, Taiwan, as the first comprehensive university with a vast range of colleges in Eastern Taiwan. NDHU expanded its academic impact not only at domestic level but also at international level, the European Union Research Centre (EURC) at NDHU was thus founded in 2009, as a partner university centre in the consortium of seven universities for European Union Centre in Taiwan (EUTW). In order to promote EU studies and the visibility of the EU, the EURC at NDHU holds annually EU Forums, EU Grant Workshops, EU Summer Schools and the EU Club, etc. in Eastern Taiwan and acts as a platform to link academic and civil societies to discuss EU-related subjects, including European Economics, the integration process of the EU, EU social policies, EU immigration policy, European culture(s), EU studies in Europe; the EURC also held European Film Festivals on campus over the past years. The EURC at NDHU has always cooperated closely with the Department of Public Administration, founded in 2002 at NDHU. The key person linking the two institutions at NDHU is Professor Dr. Chin-peng Chu at the Department of Public Administration. He is not only the first Professor of NDHU that finished his Ph.D. in Europe but also the first teaching staff member that offered courses on EU studies at NDHU. He has devoted his efforts to promoting understanding of the EU and EU Studies in Taiwan for more than 20 years after he came back to his native country. For establishment of Jean Monnet Chair NDHU plans two teaching courses with titles of “Origins and Evolution of the European Union” and “Globalization and the EU Integration: Implication for East Asia” which will be taught by Professor Dr. Chu at the Department of Public Administration of NDHU to students from all fileds. Besides, workshops and roundtables related the EU subjects will also be organized as part of the teaching courses.
