"The fact that children learn how to program in primary schools is still an exception in Germany", wrote the newspaper "Tagesspiegel" on 7 March 2014. We want to part of the changing situation and give the schools the possibility of using this pedagogical approach. Therefor, we will introduce the Scratch programming language in the classes. It was developed by the "Lifelong Kindergarten group" in the " Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Media Lab ." A particular attention was given to make the programming for children and youth motivating. The developers of Scratch describe the possibilities of the program as follows: " Scratch is designed to help young people ( ages 8 and up) develop 21st century learning skills. As they create Scratch projects, young people learn important mathematical and computational ideas , while thus gaining a deeper understanding of the process of design". For the introduction into the regular classes we will develop a complete Unit. It will consist of three parts: the curriculum, wich embodys the contents, learning targets and skills, which can be achieved through the lesson.
An educational handout will summarize concrete didactic references, which were obtained from the pratice and will then be assigned to the respectives contents and learning targets. A Scratch - manual is designed as a workbook for the pupils . The manual is both exercise book and log book in which the children document their work.
Naturaly, during the project period, will constantly arise results . These are mainly games programmed by the students and interactive stories in Spanish and German . We will exchange about the work between the partner schools to strenghten the aspect of language skills. With the planned teaching and learning activities, we will take the first step to establish a new learning area in primary school . We will not only use an innovative IT tool, but also develop a wide range of skills that encourage logical thinking; particularly the development of problem-solving strategies .
We expect this project to have a strong impact in the field of media literacy . But at the same time , we expect a noticeable improvement in the language skills of students : The programming work demands constant logical reflection and textualization of the algorithms that must be used for the solution of the problems posed . The knowledge gained through working with programming also have a strong impact in the area of mathematics.
We want an extension of the curriculum in our schools by integrating the developed unit into the curricula .
