The purpose of the project on EU Comparative Regionalism Studies is to provide students with a comparative analysis of different sub-regional integration organizations in Latin America and their diverse stage of development, including institutions, legal order and dispute settlement mechanism. Their similarities and distinctions with the EU and their interaction with other sub-regional and regional organizations will also be evaluated, as well as the perception of their legitimacy by States and individuals involved. The project will focus on the following organizations: the EU, the Common Market of South America (Mercosur), the Andean Community (CAN), the Central American Integration System (SICA) and other less developed organizations, such as the Pacific Alliance and the UNASUR.The project will combine diverse activities in the field, such as teaching activities concerning various aspects of sub-regional integration organizations, research on a particular topic related to their dispute settlement mechanism and also an event on the legitimacy of sub-regional organizations trade tribunals. The networking will be provided in the form of partnerships with higher education institutions in Europe and Latin America, such as the following that have already been contacted: Université Libre de Bruxelles; Institut de recherche en droit international et européen de la Sorbonne (U. Paris 1); Universidad Simon Bolivar (Ecuador) and Universidad Externado de Colombia. Other departments of the Getulio Vargas Foundation are also involved in the project, such as the Getulio Vargas Foundation Law School in São Paulo and the Getulio Vargas Foundation’s International Relations Centre and International Intelligence Unit. These institutions will contribute to the excellence of the project and will foster an international and multicultural environment as their professors will be invited to participate in the auspices of the Jean Monnet Chair (voluntary and non-profit participation).
