TERMINÉ
The Department of Language Studies of the Institute of the Czech Language of the AS CR, v. v. i. provides language training to adults. We specialise in e-learning and language development of communication skills in the academic community. We also run the Writing Centre, where we offer e-learning writing courses, writing seminars, and one-on-one consultations of texts written in English. We help our students overcome problems with the structure of their texts, overall coherence, writing process, or intercultural differences. These topics are frequently ignored in the Czech education system; therefore, it is necessary to seek inspiration abroad. The objective of this project was to extend the services of the Writing Centre and to enhance the quality of the e-learning courses of the Department of Language Studies. We defined seven sub-goals: 1) To design a new preparatory course on academic writing in English for students at B1 level, and to design a follow-up course of Academic Writing. 2) To create a new seminar on presentation skills drawing on visual rhetoric. 3) To facilitate writing groups where all students work on one type of a text (e.g. a dissertation) and provide peer feedback to one another. 4) To raise the quality of our one-on-one consultations of texts written in English. 5) To design a blended learning course on C1 level. 6) To improve the teaching methodology in our current language courses. 7) To seek opportunities to collaborate with other writing centres in Europe. All five participants in this project have responsibility for the design of our courses, their content, and training of new teachers. The participants attended five conferences on writing, e-learning, and ESL methodology. All the conferences were held by leading associations in the field. The participants also attended five courses in Great Britain to improve their skills in teaching writing and to learn about the up-to-date teaching methodology and about the ICT in class. The activities were implemented in two stages (2014 and 2015). Each stage was followed by an intensive workshop where the participants of this project disseminated the knowledge and skills gained from the activities to the other teachers in our department. The participants met regularly and used the new knowledge and skills to design the courses and enhance the services of the Writing Center. This project has helped adult learners in the Czech Republic improve their writing and general communication skills in English. Because of the effective use of e-learning these skills are also accessible to working people and to university students in distance learning programmes. The new collaboration with other European institutions will connect different writing communities and facilitate new ideas and exchange of information and experience.
