PPI - Print Practice Italy - Work experience, Culture and Language learning in Palermo, a sequel to PPP and PPS.
We want to offer our students from the 7th specialisation year (prepress, graphic design, digital printing, offset printing and finishing, screen printing and lettering and rotation printing) the possibility to apply their acquired knowledge and skills in their specific study field in a professional, international context. It is an absolute added value for their education and an enrichment of their personality that they can do this work placement in selected graphic companies. The students not only learn to work in a professional environment but they are also confronted with another (European) culture. They have to express themselves in English or French on the workfloor and they have to help themselves in Italian in daily situations.
By improving their practical knowledge of English and learning a new language we add an important linguistic component to the project. The learning of a new language is very motivating and may be the start for the students to learn a new language in their later lives. With this project vocational students get the opportunity to be part of an international experience which will most certainly improve their linguistic skills (one of the cornerstones of ERASMUS+) and which will give them more opportunities on the labour market. Also the cultural component is of the essence in this project (cultural visits, gastronomy, music,...). The students will visit some important printing and design companies which is confronting as well as interesting for them.
After a thorough selection and preparation our students will do a work placement for 4 weeks in graphic companies in Palermo. They will stay in self-catering apartments and have to do their own shopping and have to prepare their own meals.
Start date is the 1st of June 2015. The students and parents will be informed about the objectives of the project, followed by a selection of the students and the preparatory activities: 2-day teambuilding, Italian language course, Italian cultural night, graphic vocabulary classes, culture classes, practical guidelines for the apprentice, getting about by public transport, ...
The work placement abroad will last 4 weeks in 2 periods (16 students in April/May 2016 - 16 students in April/May 2017).
PPI students will be more motivated and have an increasing sense of self-esteem. The personal satisfaction from what they have achieved during the whole project is enormous and the vocational students realise that they have more capacities than they have ever suspected. They play an active role in society and get a growing sense of initiative and entrepreneurship.
This overall experience will make our students more competitive and subsequently enhance their opportunities on the labour market. The former Viso projects PPP and PPS have learned us that our students undergo a big personal evolution which will be an asset during their future applications and which is an experience for life. The acquired skills and competences prove to be an added value for their future careers.
Through PPI our students learn to know another culture which broadens their look upon Europe and the values the European Union stands for. Especially for our vocational students who normally don't have the opportunity to broaden their horizon by visiting foreign countries (with school or family) this project is extremely valuable. Moreover, the way of working in a foreign company in their field is very instructive and interesting.
Next to the online language course our students will need extra computer skills to make reports in the Mobility Tool, to create a Europass CV, ... This way we try to stimulate the growing importance of digital learning.
Viso (and the European community) also wants to give the students who don't have the financial means the possibility to have a (working) experience in a foreign country. This is also important for students with limited social skills and for students of a different cultural background. This way we stimulate equity and social inclusion.
For all participants the necessary insurance documents and safety and protection measurements will be provided for.
Viso will take care of the promotion and dessimination of PPI and its results: school website, open school days, blog, contacts with Febelgra), local press,...
