The opening to Europe is a “must” in the training of our young public. This is true for those who attend the vocational school and also for the ones who are in higher education.
Our school, Sainte Catherine, which is located in Le Mans, has already much experience in terms of sending students abroad for vocational purposes and this, in the domain of catering and hotel industry. Our school of 800 students also trains for the careers of commerce. Our wish is clearly to widen our European opening to this section through the Erasmus + application.
We rely on a solid relationship with the Swedish school in Linkoping to put into contact our commerce section with theirs. The starting point of our collaboration was the greeting of 5, then 2 Swedish students in April and October 2013. These in-coming mobilities also permitted to greet the Swedish teachers.
Our mobility project is building step by step because our students in commerce are not yet used to this opening to Europe or abroad.
So the first step is with 20 students who are volunteers from the first year vocational commerce. They exchange information – namely their professional techniques- via the internet with the Swedish students. This recently ended with the shipment of a power point presentation in English sent to the Swedish school.
The second step will occur in October 2014. We shall greet a group of Swedish students who will perform a 3 week training period in a company (stores, either food stores or others) and these young students will be accommodated in the families with whom they exchanged information via the internet.
The third step will consist in the departure of 12 students from our school. They will perform a 3 week training period in Sweden. At that time, they will be in second year vocational commerce and would have been involved in the project from October 2014. Their accommodation will be ensured by the Swedish families and their daily evolution will be followed by the Swedish teachers responsible for the project.
Back to France, their experience will be valued through reports and exposés presented to the other students of second year vocational commerce. These presentations will take the form of power points, films…. Their objective will also be to compare the differences in the professional practices between the two countries – commerce activities, hygiene and security.
The benefits expected will be numerous:
- Going abroad! This seems common but every year, we discover that many of our students never went to Paris for example.
- Gaining fluency in oral English- English constitutes an exam subject.
- Increased autonomy, maturity, sense of responsibilities…constitute important criteria, even if they are difficult to assess.
The impact on the image of our school is also important. It is our responsibility to open the students to the World.
