PROJET
TERMINÉ
The background to the project is that the chess environments is very male dominated. There are very few girls/women who play chess in Sweden . The girls who still play are in an environment that is highly competitive and male-dominated. To strengthen them as individuals and inspire, we wanted to make a project with Hungary, where some of the world's best chess player of all time lives and operates in Polgar Chess Foundation.
The project aimed to strengthen the chess-playing girls' self-confidence and strengthen them for the situations and environments that are highly competitive .
Our goal was that the participants should have acquired knowledge of :
- How to be successful in a highly male -dominated environment as a woman
- Language and cultural knowledge about chess-playing girls' situation in Hungary
- What are the different options available to work with chess professionally
- How it is to have global field and how to raise your eyes and think internationally instead of just nationally
The project included 37 girls aged 13-18 years, with a total of six accompanying leaders, three from Seden and three from Hungary. The meeting took place the 2 of October 2014 - 6 of October 2014.
Activities during the trip had focus on empowerment, exploration, networking and inspiration.
This we did through workshops, visiting the Hungarian Chess festival, touring Budapest, sharing experiences and get to know participants from the different countries.
There was an inspirational lecture with Judith Polgar and Pia Cramling, two of the worlds best Chess Players, talking about what it is like to play chess as a professional and for a living as well as sharing experiences and advices of how to stay strong as a female chess player.
A lot of social activities where also made like teambuilding, bathing at an old hungarian bath and playing together for the participants to get to know each other better.
All participants expressed that it had been a power ful experience where they had got new friends, learnt about themselves and became inspired. Many expressed that they got new will to pursue chess as a professional career and to put more time and focus on it. Almost all girls expressed that they had gotten better self esteem and awareness of their situation in male dominated environments, not only in chess but in life in general. The network between the participants became very powerful and many have kept in touch and empowered each other since.
