As an innercity secondary school we have experienced a great diversity of students; now we are facing new educational challenges. Most of our students live in an area of high unemployment and limited opportunities. Over the past few months our borough has had a steady increase of refugees and migrants. Many of them live in emergency shelters including a number of unaccompanied teenagers. These students are allocated to local schools including ours.Our aim is to provide each student with equal educational opportunities regardless of their background abilities or gender. Therefore we work on recognizing students' potential and to offer a wide variety of educational opportunities.These new challenges require specific training-offers for teachers and the exchange with experienced collegues from other European countries. Some European countries like Malta, Italy or Great Britain have had extensive experience with Diversity and Equality and we hope to gain new insights and impulses for our work here in Cologne.Using museums and heritage as a teaching and learning resource can encourage students to broaden their verbal and creative scope of expression.Within the next 24 months we intend to send pairs of collegues from different departments to the chosen courses. These collegues will pass on fresh ideas and new skill to our staff which will positively effect our educational work especially in the areas of intercultural communication skills and gender equality.As longterm effects we expect a successful integration of migrant and refugee students into the mainstream classes. In particular students will be supported to make non-gender based autonomous career choices. Overall we aim to increase the number of qualified leaving certificates for all our students .
