TERMINÉ
Our school “Eloy Villanueva” is a state school which is situated just outside Santander in Monte (Cantabria, Spain). It is a local school in a quiet, rural area that is expanding and slowly becoming incorporated into the city.
Our main characteristic over the last sixteen years has been our involvement in the MEC-British Council bilingual project, where 40% of our curriculum is imparted through English .This has been made possible by English specialists, two of which are native speakers with permanent positions in the school, another two who are also native and are language assistants and other members of staff who have a B2 level in English and have bilingual accreditation.
During this school year 2013-2014, we have introduced a project called “Eloy Comunica”, with the aim of incorporating the use of Media communication and internet into our teaching practice, exploring ways to communicate information and of creating links and exchanges with other schools with similar projects.
It is in this context, that the Head of the school has proposed the need for specific training to meet the objective of both these programs. The positive response from the staff has encouraged us to present this project with the following objectives:
-Update and revise the methodology used in the teaching of a second language.
-Develop the teaching of other subject areas through English by increasing teaching resources.
-Improve teaching competence in new technology, especially video.
-Expand the international dimension of our school through the use of the e-Twinning platform.
-Offer the opportunity for members of the staff to renovate their teaching practices.
To achieve this, our first aim is to find courses that specifically suit our needs and objectives:
-“The Playground Classroom Language Teaching Methodology for Primary School”, which is held in the Executive Training Institute (St. Julian´s, Malta), for six participants.
-“A Fun and Interactive Learning Experience with Digital Creative Tools”, which is held in Infocus Training (Kerry, Ireland), for three participants.
We consider that the first course will encourage the development of new teaching methods relevant to both Infant and Primary stages, and that the six participants will be English teachers or teachers of non-language subjects from the different levels who will continue to work in our school next year.
As regards the second course, the participants will also be from the different levels in our school so that the maximum benefit will be obtained from the newly learnt skills which will then be incorporated into our teaching practice.
In the next school year 2014-2015, we will create a work group where information received on the courses will be shared. We will also look for other European schools with similar profiles and projects, through e-twinning, with the aim of establishing links, organizing exchange visits, the sharing of resources, videos, radio programs and the press.
The learning outcomes that we hope to achieve are:
-To consolidate the “Eloy Comunica” project and for it to become an important part of our school identity.
-To establish links with other schools in order to consolidate a European dimension.
-To develop a natural English speaking environment through the exchange of materials made by our students, within the European work group.
-To consolidate a shared and progressive methodology in the teaching of non language subjects throughout the Infant and Primary stages.
This school year, we have had the opportunity to visit other schools with projects where Media communication and the local environment are at the core of their teaching methodology: For instance,
Colegio Amara Berri in San Sebastián(http://amaraberri.org/ab/index) which has been working in this way for thirty years.
During the next three school years, our aim is to consolidate our school identity through both our projects: The MEC British council bilingual project and “Eloy Comunica” project by developing new teaching skills that we will project into the future.
