CONTEXT AND BACKGROUND
This Project is being carried out within the Plurilinguism framework started in our institute 4 years ago.
The first plan organized in our school took place in the school year 2012-13. It consisted on teaching social science, technology and mathematics in English to a specific group of 1st of ESO. This same group of students followed the same pattern for the following three years.
During the school year 2014-15 other actions are to be deployed by adding contributions in English in social science, technology and mathematics for all the class groups in 1st and 2nd of ESO.
During the school year 2014-15 the before mentioned actions continue and a specific plan called GEP (Experimental Group for Plurilinguism promoted by the Catalan Department of Education) is implemented in 1st of ESO formalizing all the actions that had been carried out in the institute until that moment.
During the present school year 2015-2016 this GEP programme is being implemented in 1st and 2nd of ESO. The programme Bachibac (French) is also scheduled to start the next school year 2016-17.
Parallel to this action plans, German and French optional subjects are being offered to students that are interested in learning a second foreign language.
OBJECTIVES
The objectives that our education community puts forward once the access to the Erasmus was granted can be defined by three dimensions:
1st: Strengthening the linguistic project of the school by contributing with new methodology skills to be implemented in the classrooms.
2nd: Improving the level of linguistic competence of the teachers involved in the general project.
3rd: Achieving a substantial improvement of the level of English of the students thanks to the teaching of non-linguistic subjects.
NUMBER AND TYPE/PROFILE OF THE PARTICIPANTS
Six teachers of the school have had access to this project. Their profiles are:
Alberto Herrero: a mathematics teacher and the promoter of the linguistic project of the school as a whole.
Mª Mercedes Ros: a social science teacher with advanced knowledge in English and French languages, who has been involved in the linguistic project since the school year 2013-14 and who is the responsible for the GEP programme.
Francisco Garófano: a technology teacher who has been involved in the linguistic project of the school since the school year 2012-13.
Esther Mellinas: an English and French teacher who is the promoter of the Bachibac programme.
Astrid Roig: A Spanish teacher who is the responsible for the German language optative subject.
Rita González: a social science teacher who has been involved in the linguistic project of the school since the school year 2013-14.
DESCRIPTION OF THE UNDERTAKEN ACTIVITIES
The actions that have been carried out have been determined by a significant group composed by the teachers who have benefited from the grant and other teachers from other subjects and school levels. This group meets once a week to share the methodologies and the techniques that were learnt in the summer courses. One of the aims of this group focuses on working on the methodologies related to the CLIL methodology. This action has as a purpose to involve other subjects into new concepts of learning having in mind that the main goal is to teach concepts from other subjects using English as the everyday language.
Other aspects that have been taken into account are conveying new cognitive concepts such as adopting different techniques for rote and visual learning. In that way, when transferring knowledge in the classroom there is a special search for activities that take into account the positive effect of applying, for example, audio or kinesthetic criteria.
Moreover, this group also takes into consideration student?s direct action when learning. In this sense the concept based on the fact that students are the main characters in the cognitive process is conveyed. In that way this kind of activities, and always under the supervision of the teacher, pairs of students or small groups are the ones in charge of getting the contents and of sharing them.
The full set of criteria is based on what the teachers who have received the grant have experienced and conveyed to their colleagues in order to have all the benefits extended to our education community.
