In our school along with the grammar school programme we also offer two vocational programmes, for a mechanical engineering technician and a mechatronic operator. For the vocational training and education of our students we have chosen the German company Kautt&Bux mainly because they are a subsidiary company of the Kolektor Group, which is based here in Idrija. We have been successfully cooperating with Kolektor for many years with very successful and high-quality training programmes offered to our students in the local area. The Kolektor Group are incredibly successful internationally and many of their partners come from German speaking countries. For this reason it is important that in both vocational programmes we teach the basics of technical German, so that in practice the students can communicate in this foreign language. The practical part of the curriculum is taught in the school’s workshops and multimedia classrooms and 70% of their practical skills are learned at various local businesses including Kolektor, Hidrija, Eta Cerkno, Ydria Motors as well as other smaller private businesses. By completing parts of their vocational training and education abroad, students will be given the opportunity to become familiar with more challenging and complicated manufacturing processes and computer operated production lines. They will learn how to program a CNC machine, as well as work with new high-tech machinery. They will become familiar with the technical operating systems and supply chain of the company including purchasing and ordering materials. By working at the company they will gain first-hand experience of the work methods, work culture and international working standards in a foreign company. Of importance is also the possibility for the students to develop social skills, responsibilities and lingual competences by participating and getting to know the real-life dynamics of the working processes. The knowledge gained of different technologies and materials, quality control and machine operating systems will be of incredible benefit to the students once they enter the employment market. The development of practical and foreign language skills is an essential part of the vocational training abroad. We wish for the students to understand the importance of their chosen future profession and the role which their gained knowledge will bring to their professional career development and enhance the Idrijan economy, globally and locally. Our school is determined to try out the ECVET method as we want a transparent system of evaluating the students’ achievements. The participants of the mobility project will be the 3rd year students included in the mechanical engineering technician programme. In every mobility group two special needs students will be included as well as a student with a lower socio-economic status. We organized three mobilities. The first was organized as a preparation meeting between the mentors in the company and our accompanying teacher. Students had practical work for 14 days in September 2014. The other two took place for a period of three weeks in May 2015 and November 2015 as part of the compulsory practical vocational training. The participants took part in Herrenberg in different phases of the producing process. They made drawings of the products with the computer. They worked on computer numeric controlled (CNC) machines. Important part of their activities was error detection in case of malfunction of the machine or of the production line. At all these activities the participants upgraded their technical knowledge and got acquainted with new production methods. They learned a lot about the German working culture and their high concern for the best quality of the products. Long term benefit was speaking foreign languages, because they were forced to do it in the foreign country. Staying in the hostel gave them many opportunities to meet peers from different countries and to exchange work and life experience. In their free time they visited the sights of the nearby towns: museums, galleries, castles, exhibitions, fairs. They also enjoyed tasting national food and drink and listening to the local musicians.
