Our secondary vocational boarding school for students with hearing disabilities (the only one of its kind in the region) with 4 types of schools: SOŠ, SPŠO, Grammar School and OU educates students with hearing disabilities together with students with developmental learning difficulties. This requires a high level of expertise among the teaching staff as well as a special approach to the individual needs of the students. The goal of our educational institution is to do everything possible to help the socio-educational process. To do this, we strive to improve learning comprehension and fulfil the set requirements of the curriculum with special attention to the handicaps and special needs of our students. Thus, we carried out four training courses within the frame of the European mobility programme that has enhanced the professional and language competence of our pedagogues: ICT technology and its use in teaching • This course provided new information about the use of ICT in teaching. It introduced newest trends, programs and methods how to integrate ICT into our vocational and very specific education. It taught us innovative ways how to deliver work experience and vocational training to our students. CLIL - Content and Language Integrated Learning • This course helped to implement a foreign language into the teaching process of other subjects. Despite a hearing handicap, our students are educated in foreign languages, whose knowledge is indispensable for a successful and forward-thinking life in the EU. English for the teachers of vocational schools • This course, specially designed for the vocational education, significantly contributed to the methodology of teaching relevant vocational subjects. Our teachers gained new valuable information from the international field of vocational education. Language and methodology for the teachers of English • This course, focused on the methodology of teaching English, enhanced teachers’ creativity. It included teamwork on various projects, the use of drama and conversation to teach a language, and many other inspiring topics. The teachers found it very stimulating and now aim to implement new principles into foreign language teaching the deaf or otherwise handicapped students. These mobility courses contributed to the improvement, modernisation, and better education of the handicapped students. Progressive ideas from the ICT technologies course, the inspirational methodological courses as well as special pedagogues’ improvement in language skills all contributed to the modernisation of the school. We integrated new knowledge, methodology and trends into the teaching process. We implemented new kinds of visual aids, which helped teaching students with hearing disabilities. We innovated the teaching process; the digital skills and gaining information from websites in English have improved. The school helped us create an English corner, where students have free access to English magazines and bilingual dictionaries; it is decorated with English vocabulary posters, English-speaking countries realia and an Erasmus+ project logo.
