The mobility project PluriPro is a vital step on the way to achieving one of the long term objectives set for the German schools in South Tyrol/Italy: plurilingualism. To achieve said objective the Department of Education for the German Language Group elaborated the package of measures “Promoting plurilingualism at South Tyrol’s German schools (2016 – 2020)” which was approved of by the local government on 01/12/2015 by means of the provincial resolution no 1383.South Tyrol’s future student generations are intended to leave school as plurilingual European citizens whose intercultural competences will allow them to interact successfully in a European and international context. The Innovation and Consultancy Service, the institution responsible for the teachers’ in-service training, established the profile of the teachers capable of allowing students to develop the necessary competences. A careful needs analysis regarding the teacher training required identified two main areas calling for action:1. the teaching of English at primary school2. CLIL at lower and upper secondary schoolsIn particular, teachers need to:• deepen their knowledge of the English language• widen their plurilingual and intercultural competences• familiarise themselves with new teaching methodologies, specifically with reference to Young Learners and CLILThe schools for the German speaking population in South Tyrol do not strike for their European dimension; on the contrary, European project proposals are still an exception. This is why the Department of Education decided to found the PluriPro Consortium and to involve 37 schools as members of the consortium. The objectives were set for the 3 target groups which emerged during the detailed project planning:English teachers at primary schools will achieve the language level B2, they will familiarise themselves with resources and materials appropriate for Young Learners and they will be more confident in the planning and delivering of lessons.CLIL teachers will achieve the language level C1 and have a sound knowledge of the CLIL method. They will be able to successfully teach subject contents in a foreign language and to adapt materials according to the learners’ needs.Foreign language teachers will be familiar with the basics of the CLIL method in order to efficiently cooperate with their CLIL colleagues. All 3 target groups will widen their plurilingual and intercultural competences and help their and other schools to develop a European dimension. The mobility activities intended to allow the participants to reach the stated objectives are English language courses, foreign language teaching methodology, Young Learners and CLIL methodology and job shadowing.50 teachers will be selected to take part in the project. Instead of aiming at quantity, attention is paid to the high quality and the sustainability of the training envisaged. As the objectives stated cannot be reached after a single mobility episode, the participants will be required to plan a personalised training package which contains at least two mobility events. The participants will be selected according to clear and transparent criteria. In order to guarantee the strongest impact possible, one of the criteria will be their willingness to collaborate in working groups at the Innovation and Consultancy Service and/or school of origin. The smooth organisation and management of the project are guaranteed by the qualifications of the key people involved that are going to form the PluriPro KA1 Committee. Furthermore they can count on the support of other experts working within the Department. The project will be launched starting with two mandatory training sessions for the teachers involved. The individual participant’s progress within the project will be assessed in collaboration with the Directors of General and Administrative Services. The project as a whole will be monitored and evaluated in itinere and ex post with suitable instruments (IQES questionnaire surveys, structured interviews etc.), partly newly developed for the project at hand (PluriPro Dossier). With regard to the dissemination of the results the established communication channels will be used (websites, specialist local magazines etc.) as well as newly created ones (eTwinning Group). In all 3 target groups the training abroad will result in a remarkable professional development leading to higher quality teaching and an increased level of motivation. Who will benefit immediately are undoubtedly the teachers’ students and colleagues. However, the mid and long term impact will be far stronger. Having profited from continuing linguistic and methodological training and developed intercultural competence these teachers will be capable of innovating the teaching at their schools. They will also positively influence schools at provincial, national and European level and hence achieve the stated long term goal: the future generations’ plurilingualism.
