plaGiarism or crEativity: teachiNg Innovation versUs Stealing

Digital skills and World Wide Web, as free huge database, are largely widespread among young people (87% visit webpages, chats or IMs, 85% email (Cardoso ‘07). Even if Digitals is a valuable learning opportunity, Plagiarism has largely come up. Students judge E-content always reliable copying and pasting regardless to draw up own reports. GENIUS challenge aims at strengthening students’ transversal skills in secondary schools providing an innovative and attractive learning pathway matching the skills provisions for employability and coping with the emerging issues due to digital fluency. First, Teachers attend a Multilingual e-course about mainly Plagiarism, WEB Fair use, Copyrights, pedagogical methodologies to support creativity. Later on students attend a Multilingual e-course about mainly Plagiarism/sanctions, WEB Fair use, critic approach to WEB, reliability, citing, Creative writing, innovation against plagiarism in business. Finally as a joint learning stage, students are divided into 2 transnational teams and start an online “Battle of Minds” supported by didactic tutors. Each team have to draw up 2 documents in English, one original and one fake. Each team assesses the rival documents detecting the original and fake one. Transnational teamwork enhances cultural integration to build a fair young EU citizen. They improve learning to learn skill, social and civic competences, sense of initiative and entrepreneurship, cultural awareness and expression, English and digital skills. Furthermore they learn from “My Myths”, biographies’ collection of popular people who work hard to think up genius ideas and Code to be Genius, a reference model behavior for fair EU Citizens. Impact: 300 representatives of target groups reached, 100 directly involved in research/experimentation; 6000 contacts for valorisation, 250 participants in key events; 3000 web-visitors, 40.000 Content View Hits; Code subscribed by 30 of target groups; 5 letter of interest signed.
