Phenomenon of Growing Popularity of Radical Political Movements in Europe: Cuases and Prospects
Date du début: 1 sept. 2016, Date de fin: 31 août 2018 PROJET  TERMINÉ

This project is designed to explore the phenomenon of growing popularity of radical movements in EU countries in the recent years and to understand what can be done to overcome the consequences. While populist and extremist movements have been active in Europe over the last decades, they have recently benefited from a variety of issues, which they managed to use to their benefit. Strong populist and authoritarian driftings have been raising great concerns in Europe. Though often successful in the last decade in increasing their support, radical populist movements are harmful to the health of European democracies. Beneath their popular public image, their anti-immigration and nationalistic agenda remain a threat to human rights. The Institute of World Civilizations has been engaged in teaching and research of political systems of European countries for about 20 years, including the contemporary trends of their development. It has become obvious that deep and comprehensive study of contemporary trends of transformation of political systems in the EU countries and rise of radicalism and extremism would undoubtedly represent theoretical and practical interest for both researchers and political elites, the media and civil society and require cross-country studies with the participation of the expert community from different EU countries. Thus, the Institute of World Civilizations offers a project in the framework of Jean Monnet programme with the objective to raise public awareness about the consequences of changes in the party and political systems of a number of EU countries for the European political institutions. Experts, University professors, representatives of political parties, media and civil society of a host country and 3-4 representatives from each of the participating countries will be engaged in the discussions/debates at the round tables. It is planned that at these roundtables the current trends for emerging radical movements will be discussed in detail.
