Sending trainees into EU countries is one of the essential contributions for the education and training of future graduates, moreover it is one of the basic aims in the education of commited EU citizens. Teaching with the awareness of intercultural aspects is an essential principle in the HLW-FW Zwettl. The awareness of an European sense of unity and belonging is promoted by a constant cross-cultural exchange and meeting of people to give them an insight into the world of work as well as their life in general.
Consequently internships and work-placements abroad serve to prepare and qualify trainees for international competition as well as encourage their mobility for job reasons.
One has to emphasize that a main reason for participating in this project ist to increase the applicants‘ chances in the international job market which also can be seen as a major aspect of successful European integration and mobility.
Education and training of social skills which are basic to the educational system of the Austrian ‘ HUM- schools‘ consequently can be tested on the job. Besides these aspects, cross-cultural language skills and the ability to work in a team must be seen as major advantage in the European job market.
The internship in a foreign country is basic for the understanding of European future networks, besides the insight into into a foreign culture and its people can be seen as the basis for a common EU-future, inspired by terms of interest, openness and a sense of unity.
In the course of their compulsory internship, lasting for twelve weeks, four applicants/ students of the HLW Zwettl plan to travel to Germany. To be more precisely - three of them will work in a superior hotel (4-5 diamonds) in Munich, while one student will spend her internship in a Bavarian Holiday Village. The application for these future-trainees, who will benefit from the ERASMUS + idea, is directly put by our school – the HLW Zwettl.
To arouse the interest of future ERASMUS+ applicants for finding an internship in a foreign EU-country, we do organize parents' evenings and present reports of last year's trainees. Furthermore we provide a step by step guidance by the head of department for future applicants which concerns the application procedure as well as advice on how to make a treaty with future employers. These treaties together with the company documents form the basis for the ERASMUS+ application procedure.
The head of school , the head of department as well as members of the EDP teaching staff support and guide these future applicants.
Moreover the trainees are obliged to write a diary on their work placement which finally must be handed in to the department.
Basically this diary also serves as basis for assessment in the subject Business Organization consequently the teaching staff and applicant do have a final discussion on this paper. Teaching staff as well as applicants are aware of the importance of such a diary and the advantage for a future application in the field of gastronomy and hotel business - a perfect and interesting diary-folder could be decisive on the job market!
Another important device is feedback, thus finally a feedback-sheet must be presented to the ministry . Also we do have a written evaluation via QIBB . All theses measures are basic devices which help to improve quality and they are also subject of discussion in Cooking and Service education at our school. In the long run these team-reflections may help to adapt to future requirements as well as changes much faster but also help to confirm successful procedures.
In applying for ERASMUS+, our school not only has the intention to enrich professionalism in the field of ‚education and learning‘ but als to make cross-cultural aspects part of the school’s daily routine, which also helps to sharpen the cross-cultural awareness of all participants.
Finally I want to emphasize that international ideas and concepts as well as the basic aims of ERASMUS+ have become part oft he school’s programme and guiding principles.
It is worth stating at this point that all these aspects mentioned above have provided the HLW-FW Zwettl the advantage of more competitiveness among other colleges in Lower Austria- in the Waldviertel.
