Parents are Partners

The project involves five special schools for physically disabled pupils in the age range 4 to 21 years old from 5 countries - Belgium, Netherlands, Northern Ireland, Germany and Hungary. The co-ordinating school is Mozgásjavító School, Budapest, Hungary. The project is focussing on the role of parents and how they communicate and work with the special school in each country, for the mutual benefit of the pupils. The main aim is to encourage the cooperation between the pupils, their parents and staff. As well as working collaboratively to address the level of support for parents, the project will involve parents, pupils and also staff sharing best practices from all the partner schools and their education systems. There will be many end products: a report on requirements and difficulties of parents in different countries, an interactive homepage or network to help sharing the knowledge, exchanging and building on experience and good practices, an elaborated training programme to facilitate the cooperation between the people taking part in the developmental process (pupils, parents, professionals), a video-library about training in practice. All the partners are special schools operating in different environments but all have an increasing emphasis on the inclusion of the young people. It is crucial that the theme for this Comenius project will help each school to develop their own strategies and to find their own role in an inclusive educational setting which has both young people and parents to the forefront of what they are trying to achieve. Our schools are keen to enhance the service provided to all their pupils and their parents with a particular focus on adapting their role in an era of educational inclusion with the emphasis on the inclusion of parents.
